Good luck. I use the gentle leader head collar on my 6 and 9 month old boxers and they do an excellent job with it. It took them some time to get used to it but I started with 5 minutes and increased the time they wore it gradually.

pulls on walks and slips harness/collar

On the same note as the topic my 5 month old boxer puppy is coming into his "terror" stage. He was originally good on walks and picked it up quickly that if he wanted to get somewhere he has to keep slack on the leash. Whenever he would pull I would stop walking and he'd have to sit down and wait until I started to walk again. It seems now however that he has learned to slip both his harness and his collar. He will put his head down and his front legs together and let it slide off. Does anyone have a better harness/collar that is hard for them to slip off? Also in the morning when he is half asleep he will sit down and not budge no matter how much coercion I try to provide, with praise or treats. He just gives me the "I'm tired, it's cold out, why do you have me up at 5am to go outside to pee" look. Any suggestions on how to get him to move forward and stop resisting? Now I can pick him up and carry him out because he is still only 5 months, I do not want to be doing this every morning when he is fully grown. Any ideas or tricks that people use would be appreciated. Thank you!

Another question... How should I go about stopping him from getting so excited when he sees people or another dog? He jumps in the air and pulls while standing up on his back legs, it crazy!

I was also reading some of the other leash walking posts and I came across a thread about not letting the dogs say "hi" to other dogs and not letting anyone pet the dogs. I was wondering what the reason behind this was? Does it make your walks easier?

Take a look at the Freedom Harness by No Pull Harness | Designer Dog Collars | Wiggles Wags & Whiskers It is a no pull harness but has an additional strap between the legs that most front-clip harness don't have. Additionally, it has a limited-slip loop on the back that will prevent the dog from slipping out backwards. If you use it with a double ended leash (they sell matching ones on the site) you get great control and lovely leash behavior from the dog.

If he is slipping his collar, the collar is too loose. You should only be able to slide two fingers under his collar otherwise you need to tighten it up. I prefer martingale collars (also called limited-slip collars or greyhound collars) because you can have them loose enough to be comfortable and lie nice on the neck, but they tighten a limited but effective amount when the dog pulls so that the dog can't slip the collar.
