I just spent my lunch break reading this thread. I just wanted to say I hope all is still well with Payton, and you're all in mine and Punchie's thoughts. Punchie sends lots of wiggles and kisses.

I also wanted to say how happy I am ya'll didn't have Payton put down. I was reading through that part, I was like "Oh no, just hang in there, don't give up!". I'm so glad you didn't give up

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.

Thank you. We dont ever want to give up on her but it seemed so bad and we felt so helpless. We hope nothing like this ever happens agian. But if it does we have a care credit card now and Purdue said they would probably take us.

Hi,
I just read all the postings. I just want to share with you what happened to my neighbours boxer, Ceaser. About six month ago he was about 6 or 7 months old and he had very similar symptoms you descibed. This lasted about a week or so and the vet had no idea what was wrong. After the week Caeser was 100%. Then two or three months later once again he had the same symptoms and then they went to a specialized vet and she suspected that it could be meningitis. So they did a spinal tap and yes Caecer had meningitis. The vet started him on some medication I think called predizone or something like that it's like a steroid. Caeser got well again except that the medication made him more mellow and it increased his appetite. Slowly they have started to decrease the amount of the steriod. This took over 3 or 4 months and now he's been off comptely for about a month. And boy what a difference, he has alot more energy and he's bouncing off the wall. From the research I did and from what my neighbour's vet said, some dogs have meningitis once and they can heal wihtout any medication and many times it never comes back. But some cases it does come back periodically and it can me controlled by medication. In Caeser's case they are hoping that since he has been off the meds for a month and he didn't have a relapse he might not get it again but if he was to get it again he would have to be on a minimal dose of steriod for the rest of his life.
Please stay positive even if it meningitis... there is hope that his immune system can fight it on his own or with medication he can still live a happy life.
One more thing I want to mention... my neighbour was told that it's better to do a spinal tap when he is showing signs of the symptoms you have described because if he gets better and you have the spital tap then even though he might have meningitis the test will not show it.
GOOD LUCK!
