My 6 year old female had what we thought was an ear infection all last summer as everytime she shook her head, she would cry. She would also cry when standing up from lying down and if you touched her neck. She was on prednisone and Deramaxx. Her pain was intermittent and she would run and play sometimes like nothing was wrong.
To make a long story short, we took her to a neurologist, who diagnosed her with a herniated disk in her neck. He surmised that when on the pain medicine she would feel better and then play too much and not allow her neck to heal. He placed his head under her chin and lifted her head back towards her bottom. She wouldn't cry, but he said she resisted way too early. He placed her on 100% bed rest for two weeks. She couldn't play, had to be crated when unattended, and had to go outside on her leash. He also recommened that she never wear a collar again and only use a harness. It was very hard to not let her do anything for 2 weeks, but I kept telling myself that recovery from surgery would be longer.
Her is the link to my original post. Can't figure out what is wrong with her (kind of long)
Perhaps, Peyton has something similar. Maybe you should try the two weeks of rest. It worked for us!

i am so glad to hear payton had a good weekend, just watch how much playing she does, if it is meningitis over exerting herself or becoming too hot may bring on another attack, if you end up having her tested for meninigitis i think you will find that she will need to be in the beginning of another attack for them to be able to do the spinal tap.
just to let you know something has triggered my poor little man to have another attack, we woke up this morning and he was wondering around looking lost tail down hubby tested him by offering a treat and he wouldn't even touch it - major sign to us that he is ill - he is so driven by food, he wouldn't jump up onto our bed or turn his head and he had slight tremours again, he was due his tablet this morning and 3 hrs after we gave it to him he was eating, drinking, tail up and looking much happier, still not 100% but on the mend, so unfortunately they can relapse although this is only the 2nd time this year the first was due to very hot weather so maybe he will have to be on his tablets for life - i guess i will be ringing his neurologist again - everytime we think we can take him off those tablets he relapses its amazing i was only thinking about seeing if we should take him off them last week and bam he had to go and show us nope i still need them mum.
continue to get better payton

(((HUGS))) for Payton
I just finished reading this thread...and Payton is in our thoughts and prayers. She's such a sweetheart, we'll be praying that the vet finds out what's wrong and can help her so this doesn't happen again.

I've just spent the past 30 minutes reading this thread -- at one point I actually had tears in my eyes to hear of the pain you guys were going through. I have no good advice, but just wanted to let you know that we're all thinking and praying for you.
Please tell Payton that Kaz and Haylee send their licks and we hope she gets better really soon.

Tigger is almost back to normal today - just doesnt want to jump onto our bed - not because he can't but just a ploy to get mummy to lift him up and down because while i was in the shower this morning he had jumped back on the bed - i think he was playing on it to try and get mummy to stay home again - cheeky little boy and he is eating and playing with brandy but still tired which is due to the meds, i'm waiting for his neurologist to ring me today just to update on him.
anyway i hope payton is continuing to improve
