Duke vomits and doesn't eat
Hello all, i'm new to the board and have a question about our 11 week old pup. Duke is definately not himself lately. He's sad and mopes around and throws up. He hasn't been eating much in the last couple of days. He kind of dry heaves a few times and then vomits slime (the last few times with nothing in it). The first couple of times i find stuff that looked like pieces of tree bark. Duke and Emma love to chew on sticks and they get into leaf piles and things. We took him to the ER last night and ruled out parvo, got some antibiotics and Amoxi (to help prevent vomiting). This morning he threw up three times in a row. We're going to the store to get him some high fiber fruits or juices so he can eat something and hopefully clean him out. Any suggestions or anyone have this happen before???

I would try possibly feeding small amounts of something bland, boiled chicken breast, etc...Also, I know that some antibiotics can make you queasy on an empty stomach.

Does he seem to be throwing up when it's been a while since he's eaten? Mine does that if his meals are spaced too far apart - it's yellow/slimy bile that he throws up. Then it's tricky because he doesn't want to eat with his stomach upset, but he has to eat for his stomach to be better...so I try to give him a yummy treat to settle his stomach and then he'll eat about an hour later. Anyway, if you think that could be the cause, try more frequent meals and something right before bedtime so he doesn't wake up with a completely empty stomach.

The doctor ruled out a blockage since he wasn't in pain when he applied pressure to his tummy. Duke has just been dewormed about two weeks ago, and his last sample turned up negative for parasites. He's still moping around with about 1/4 of his usual energy. He drank some apple/prune juice earlier and has since cleaned out his bowl of chicken soup. I mixed the chicken soup with some plain yogurt (they seem to love that stuff). He had diarrhea this morning and has been having it on and off for about a week. It was only until two days ago that we noticed a huge behavioral change. Okay, he just vomited again. Looks like i'm going to have to get ahold of the vet again. Thanks for the input everyone. Please, if you have anything just let me know. Thanks,
Duke's Daddy

The only way to know forsure about a blockage is an xray. Sometimes they can tell without doing the barium. I assume he's been pooping (you said he has the runs), but they can still have a partial blockage in the intestines or in the stomach.
I would recommend calling your vet back.

Update on Duke
Okay, took him back to the ER Vet yesterday evening because of his continued vomiting. We had to leave him overnight, but the vet called and said that his phospherous levels were very high. He said it could be because of the dehydration from all the vomiting and diarrhea or it could be congenital kidney failure. I'm sure hoping for the former. I've heard of Renal Failure and i'm assuming that is what congenital kidney failure is? We're going to go see him today and let Emma visit him for awhile. I'm hoping his levels are back down to normal. Thanks for the input everyone!

Congenital Renal Failure is something they are born with, Acute is from getting into Anti-freeze or something. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Duke and I sincerely hope your vet is able to rule out CRF.

Update on Duke AND Emma
Hello all. last night i put Emma in the ER to run some blood and get her on IV fluids. She came down with the same symptoms as Duke. This makes me and the vet feel like it's something environmental as opposed to congenital. Duke's BUN fell from 99 to 43 overnight, and he is looking really well. He had much more energy and looked a little more like himself. Tomorrow i expect to bring him home, YAY!!!! Emma is about a day and a half later than Duke with the same problem and i'm hoping she is doing alot better tomorrow as well. I kept hearing the Anti-Freeze question come up, but that is basically impossible as we don't even have any around and if we did it would certainly be kept where the dogs do not go and the vehicles aren't leaking. There was an adult Lab in the ER that had gotten into Anti-Freeze while Duke was there, and he didn't make it. I found out today when i asked. I felt really bad for the owner and the dog. That is so sad, makes me want to tear up, well i guess i did His name was JoJo. I'm feeling really good about Duke and Emma right now, and i hope they are healthy forever. Boxers are so wonderful, it's hard to describe. You guys know what i mean. I'm looking forward to them comming home and playing around. The vet thinks it could be lepto or some other infectious problem since they both came down with it at the same time. Here's to the sweet wonderful Boxer!

Wonderful Update!
Duke is finally home! He is looking great! He just woofed down a bowl of boiled chicken and rice. He is as hyper as he was before. Poor Emma is still in the vet hospital, but not the ER anymore. I'm sure Duke misses her, and i think she will be getting alot better tonight. She should probably be home in a day or so. I thank everyone for the kind words and Duke says hi! Their so sweet. Can't wait until Emma is back home too!!!
