allergies

my chopper seems to have developed some allergies that the vet thinks might be food related. She suggested we try a protein source that he would have never experienced. I really couldn't find one so I purchased Wellness Lamb. Chopper has had a lamb based food when he was younger but not of the quality of Wellness. I thought I would give that a try first before trying the Wellness Fish and Potatoe variety. Anyone have any suggestions or comments on how to approach the allergies. They seem to be mild however he does lick his feet and will scratch his face sometimes until he bleeds.

My Caesar has major allergies! If you do a search I'm sure you'll come up with quite a few of my posts along with a ton of others. Try to keep on top of the allergy thing because if left to their own devices our babies can do alot of damage to themselves. Also, remember that it will take a good few weeks for the new food to work. and remember to go gentle don't change it overnight--work it in gradually or bellies can get very upset.

good luck!

Another thing to keep in mind.....while you are trying different foods to rule out (or confirm) food allergies.....the dog can have NOTHING else during this time!! This includes treats!! If you buy treats, make SURE they are truly an allergy brand of treats.

Many dogs are allergic to wheat, soy, & corn.

Unhappy

Apollo has been having problems with allergies for about 2 months now. The vet had told me to give him benadryl, but it was like giving him speed. He was running laps around my bedroom all night long, so they gave him a prescription drug(chlorpheniramine)and that seems to help a little, but he is on a special diet (Ican't remember the name of it, but it's something Z/D) and he can't have any kind of treats. They also just sent out a blood sample to do some sort of serum allergy test, to see specifically what he's allergic to. But it just started out with little hives and it got worse. My poor baby was itching so bad, he was crying, and he ended up getting ear infections. It was awful.

We did the allergy test with C as well and he's got a bunch. We use the serum that they concocted and it seems to help although I really won't know till next spring!
