Question

One of my mothers boxers has been getting these white spots all over her body. She is a flashy fawn, with a white chest. These spots are mainly on her head, but there are a few on her legs and rear-end and are fairly small. The vet says he's never seen anything like it and has been checking around but just doesn't know for sure what could be causing this. We are a little worried wondering what this is. If anyone has any comments please let me know! Thanks!!

Hi, there! What you're describing in your boxer sounds somewhat like what Harley has. His started out as white patches all around the perimeter of both ears. If you tugged on one of the little white patches, the hair would come out with the white "stuff"? and leave a tiny bald patch. We took him to several vets who suggested all sorts of things but, finally, after visiting a University vet hospital, it was determined that Harley had seborreah or psoriasis. We had to bathe his ears in a special tar shampoo and the problem was gone within a week or two. That was last summer and now, we've noticed that Harley has the same type of spots on his head. I shampooed them and the problem is clearing up. I don't know whether this will help you or not but good luck and please keep us posted. Have a super day!

I have relayed this information to my mother who is soo thankful, by the way! She had a few questions. One, did the hair grow back? Also, other than the shampoo is there anything else that you can treat this with such as pills, to prevent it from recurring?

My vet told me to give Harley an antihistamine every day. I gave him 1 Benadryl every morning with his food until the problem was cleared up. I guess seboreah is some sort of allergic reaction. The problem cleared up for a couple of months and then returned but not nearly as badly as before. We used the shampoo again, gave Harley his Benadryl for a little over a week and now his skin is clear again. I hope this helps your mom with her furbaby. It sure is a worry when they get sick and you don't know what's wrong.
