Check-up at the vet

I was at the vet yesterday with Tegan and Owen, it was their anual check-up and I had a list of questions for him - our vet is a wonderful person!

Owen has a stinky penis It is dripping a greenish fluid and he smells terrible. The vet said we could put him on antibiotics or I could douche him twice a day with a weak solution of iodine and water. I opted for the douche and will use antibiotics as a last resort. Has anyone ever had to do this to a male dog before? What should I expect? The vet said that he will most likely enjoy the procedure!

Tegan as some of you know had a weak back that we have been doing chiropractic work with her with great success. The vet has suggested supplimenting her food with MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) to help with her bones , muslces, and joints. I know that Solid Gold sells and MSM product, does anyone else know of where I could get MSM at a reasonable price. I have also heard to look at horse stores, they sell this type of stuff too.

Overall the dogs are healthy and happy!

Did your vet recommend a dosage for the MSM? You can find it at health food stores, nutrition stores, and even pharmacies. Just make sure you look under other ingredients to make sure you're not getting a lot of fillers. Stick to a good brand to make sure you are getting pure MSM.

Thanks for the info Kristi!

I have the dosages written down at home, I will have to check it out. I will be spending this evening at different stores looking at different varieties...

YES! Zach has this too! When it gets really bad I flush it out and apply Panalog ointment into the sheath. A vet I USED to go to recommended cauterizing the glands on the penis No way! Changed vets and the one I go to now says it is an above normal production of fluid and there really isn't anything I can do except keep him clean when it gets bad. Zach has had this since he was about 3years old and he will be 9 next week. No ill effects as he is happy and healthy.
Do you find that other dogs are attracted to the smell?

ZachsMom I am SO glad to hear that you have experienced this - I thought it was kind of foolish that I had to douche my male dog. I haven't told anyone else - I knew someone here on Boxerworld would understand!!

I went home on my lunch hour and did the first douche - it went fine - he is such a good boy!

The vet said that it's normal and will happen periodically throughout his life. I can't beleive that your old vet told you to cauterized his glands - I don't even want to imagine the pain that it would cause poor Zach Glad to hear that you have a new vet.

What is Panalog ointment? Do I buy it a the drug store?

Other dogs do seem to be more interested in his stinky penis! Tegan my female boxer is constantly trying to clean him - which Owen doesn't mind one bit

Glad to hear that Zqach has not been effected by this.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me, it has really put my mind more at ease.

You have to get panalog cream from your vet but it works for a variety of things. Lexi had rug burn on her vulva from scooting on the carpet and it took care of it in a flash! It's a good cream to keep around the house. As for the MSM, I know that it can be expensive. You may want to check places like Costco, BJ's or Sam's Club if you have any of those. Best of luck!

Kysha-
Thank Goodness for Boxerworld, right? Where else can we talk about Owen and Zach's private parts without totally grossing people out.
Like Aimee said, you need to get Panalog from a Vet. I used it on a couple of occasions when the "stinky penis syndrome" got real bad. I don't think it made that much of a difference (it just drips right back out), but it made ME feel better
Glad to hear Tegan is helping out
