Unhappy Ticks - help!!!!

Tommy had a tick under his jaw.

I rang the vet and the nurse said it would be easy for me to remove it myself by putting vaseline around it then after 10 mins or so, tweesering it out.

Anyway she stressed that I must get it all out. So Mark held Tommy and I tweezered. The sac thing came off but I believe the tick is still in Tommy's skin.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

I tried to tweezer it out but it wouldn't come. In the end Tommy was upset and it was bleeding a bit so we put some antiseptic cream on and left it.

Will the tick die now or what?

Ticks should be removed entirely becaue any part that's left inside may cause infection. I suggest that you take Tommy to the vet where they can take out the rest of the tick (if it is still there).

If you happen to find another tick sometime, here's a tip that my vet has given to me - get a cotton ball moistured in cooking oil or kerosene (which is better) and cover the tick with it. After about 10 minutes the tick will die and will soon fall out by itself. You can also tweezer it out by carefully twisting it in one direction.

Good luck and my fingers are crossed for Tommy!

General has had ticks since we move here. They are gross. Anyway I also wasn't able to get one completely out the vet told me to keep an eye on it and if it looks infected to bring him in. It didn't get infected and soon healed. I now put a monthly treatment on him by Hartz and haven't anymore episodes with ticks. BLAK!! Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies.

I just found some Frontline in the cupboard that I forgot we had, so I've sprayed a bit of that on where the tick is still embedded. I'll have a look tomorrow to see if I can get it out.

Ooooohhhh I hate ticks!!! Hannah had a tick one time and we failed to get it all apparently because it ended up abcessing and became a real mess. If you have any doubts, have the vet checked it as you don't want the mess we had...she actually had to have a little chunk of her skin removed surgically, so please be careful. Also we use diazanon granules in our yard to control fleas and ticks and use frontline monthly on the dogs...works great...no fleas ot ticks anymore. Good Luck djk

I hate them too (who loves them? LOL) We have an invasion of tick this year and vet clinics report about 100 dogs and cats with ticks daily... But what is very bad, we have an epidemic of piroplasmosis which is spread by ticks A lot of dogs died and my vet says she spends 90% of her working time with the dogs who got piroplasmosis.
I feel paranoid!
