Question

Zeus has developed real bad hives over the weekend. Of course these things always happen over the weekend/holiday. We came home Sat. night and his right eye was swollen and he had raised areas down both sides of his torso. I immediately gave him some Benadryl, but that hasn't seemed to do the trick. he does not appear to be having any difficulty breathing, and he is in great spirits. We had done a major house cleaning Friday night and used a lot of bleach to clean with. Could the residual fumes be giving him his hives???? I am taking him to the Vet this p.m., but I was curious if anyone else has had this type of problem. I feed him Nutro for large breed puppies with yogurt on it. He gets nothing else to eat, no table scraps at all. We also used one of those carpet deodorizer powders that you vacumn up when we were cleaning. Any help "y'all" can give would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Todd, I'm just moving this down to health issues. There are quite a few posts of hives in that section which may help. Hope Zeus is okay.

Brutus has had hives 2 times this year. Both times we believe they were due to a bee sting or other bite. Was your pup outside a lot?? We haven't had any problem with cleaners but you never know.

Hi, your post reminded me of something that happened 2 weeks ago. My Amy girl (3.5 years now) got BIG hives for the first time. There were whole large areas on her legs and body but she did not seem to have breathing problems. The fur was raised over those areas it looked like large patches of it.
I took her to the vet later in the day - but I could tell that they were getting better, but still I wanted the vet to see her.
The Vet also said that it is always very difficult to find out what caused this.
She got 2 shots from the vet and she was fine and no raised areas after 2 hours.
We did 2 things
1. removed the rest of a certain type of sticky kind of creeper from the garden > was a suspect
2. I stopped letting Amy sniff my new aromatherapy oil. This was the first time I kind of let her sniff this new oil a kind of strong mixture, I think I touched her around the head and body with it. I am still using this oil, but I do not touch her with it.
But we are not exacly sure exactly why this alergy happened. So she is OK since and no sign of anything.
Amy was also stung by a wasp when she was a puppy and I had to take her to the Vet (Gigantic ear). She does react to any 'normal'bites with little lumps but nothing to worry about usually (Mosqutoes etc..)
Good Luck

Thanks for all of your help. Zeus seems to be just fine now, the hives are completely gone. When I took him to the vet on Tuesday the doc said that there is no way of knowing for sure what caused the hives. He said he did not think that the household cleaners would cause that type of reaction. He said he has never seen that happen before (and he is pretty old, HA) his money was on some kind of bite/sting, especially with his eye swelling like it did. He said that I had done everything correctly and that the Benadryl was smart. He was looking wo much better that the vet didn't feel the need to give him a prednisone shot and he didn't even charge us for the office visit . Thanks again for you help.

Zeus sends big Boxer slobbers and wiggles to you all.

Sounds like our pups ran into the same thing (see my post on hives). Maybe it is because they are only a week a part in age Lucy also eats Nutro Large Breed with yogurt. She is still on Prednisone so I am waiting to see if we have a relapse after her last dosage tomorrow. Sine her hives also happened on the weekend I asked my vet for an extra prescription of Prednisone to help her out of her misery until his office opened in case this ever happened again. You might want to have some on hand too, since the Bendadryl didn't help. FYI - My vet also recommened 25 mg of benadryl per 25 pounds every eight hours. I am glad Zeus is better and I hope Lucy is too!
