Cracked Toenail

Our pup has cracked one of her toenails vertically all the way to the nail bed by her paw. I have read that you should trim the cracked part off, but if we did that, it would take her entire nail off. Any suggestions of how to help her? It doesn't typically bother her, but when something gets caught in it she yelps and starts licking it. Has anyone used super glue to help it grow out? I know a lot of doctors are using it on humans, just not sure if it would work on a dog's nail. Other suggestions? Thanks!

When Toby split his toenail, and I don't know if this was the right thing to do, but I put nail glue on it so when it continued to grow it wouldn't split anymore. It worked and healed itself and then when he went to the vet for his nail trim it was ready to be trimmed along with the rest of them. Good luck!

Just what I would have suggested too! But if you do use nail glue, be sure to hold the nail until its dry. After gluing, then file or lightly trim bits off so it's as short as possible. Be careful not to glue your fingers to his nail! LOL Been there, done that. Not pleasant! LOL

I've even given my boy an acrylic overlay to protect his half torn off nail. He didn't like the smell at all, but was patient. It wasn't pretty, but definitely did the trick until his nail could be trimmed.
