Exclamation Small bite on the underside of his "chin"...

Hi Everyone,

My 6 month old boxer was just playing at the dog park, and when getting acclimated with an adult greyhound the greyhound nipped at him to show dominance. Well...Winston now has a small bite on the underside of his chin & it looks pretty deep to me (he is my first dog, so I'm no expert). I'm just wondering if anyone has anything I can do or should do for it? I gave him a bath when we got home & cleaned it with soap & water, but it's still bleeding a bit. He doesn't seem bothered by it at all, but I'm wondering if he needs stitches or to see the vet. Any feedback would be very much appreciated!

Thank you!

First since you are at a dog park I am going to assume Winston has had all his shots. If not did you make sure the dog that bit him did? A couple of my dogs have come home from the dog park with a bite. You can put a dab of polysporin on it to keep it from getting infected. I wouldn't worry if it is a puncture wound. If it is a gash, does it look deep? If it isn't deep they won't stitch it. The chin is a place that is going to get bumped and may very well get knocked back open. You'll just need to keep it clean.

thank you!

Winston has had all of his shots, but I'm not sure if the other dog did...we didn't notice the bite until after they had left the park!

I think it's more of a gash than a puncture, but maybe only the length of a fingernail, not long...I think it looks deep...but when I'm not touching around it to try to look at it it does stay closed on its' own.

This happened to my dog at the dog park, the other dogs K9 went straight into Tuckers "chin" and left a pretty deep "hole". We didn't realize the size of the mark until we got home. It bled for a few hours (obviously not as much as it did when the bite first happened). We just kept it clean and put warm water on it every morning/night and it just scabbed over. We took him to the vet for another cut he got from the same fight and the vet said there really wasn't anything they could do for it and that was all he recommended. Hope this helps!
