My boy Thor can't do NSAIDs (rimadyl, deramaxx). Many dogs do fine on it, but I won't be giving it to mine again. It can hurt the liver or kidneys. Or more so bring underlying conditions to light. I have been following your other thread about Ollie's heart. I am guessing with all the tests that have been run they did bloodwork and found his liver enzymes to be normal or they wouldn't have given the meds. Things do be on the look for are increased drinking and urination, and lethargy. Considering all that is going on with your boy I would pay more attention to the drinking and urination at this point, than his energy level. Like I said Thor has had issues, but my other two boxers have taken it and never had any issues.

Try to take a few deep breaths. I know you are worried but you have to relax so your boy stays relaxed. Prayers, hugs and lots of positive (((vibes))) coming to you and Ollie.

Thank you Gatorblu, his bloodwork came back all in normal range for HIM. Spoke with my vet and she told me what the side effects were and that she never would have prescribed it if he was elevated. She told me my question was totally valid and encouraged me to call with any other questions I had. He is on this very short term, just to get him through the healing process than we are taking him off. He is actually eating a lot and drinking a little more now. His energy of course is not what it should be but it is much better. I just need to get him through this part so we can get his heart condition stabilized. I love this little man so much, and will never give up untill there is no hope.....

My 9 year old Boxer, Bruno is on a daily dose of Rimadyl (75 mg) for arthritis. He seems to tolerate it well, but my vet was very careful with his dosage, saying that it should be no more than one mg per lb of dog...Bruno weighs 84 lbs.

He seems to tolerate it well, and I understand the risks, but the benefits of seeing him more comfortable and mobile made it worth it for us. It's just so difficult to know how any pet will react to meds until you try them.

Thank you for your input, Right, everything is trial and error! He was put on it to bring down swelling from his surgery and discomfort. He seems 80% better and has a couple pills left, wondering to myself if I should take him off. He hasn't shown any signs of not tolerating the Rimadyl, but I know it can affect the liver. He has a follow up with his Cardiologist Monday so I will talk to him then. Just don't want new problems when Im trying to heal him from the old ones. He can't afford any new issues:/
