Muzzle peeling?

We've had Diesel for almost 2 years and on about 5 or 6 different occassions his muzzle has peeled. It's always cleared up on it's own so we try not to worry about it too much but it's very strange. Has anyone ever seen this before?

It almost looks like it's raw from chewing on something. Does he chew on anything rough that might cause that? Creek's muzzle has gotten a little raw like that before when she's been chewing on logs (she's got a thing for firewood )... however hers has never looked quite that bad. Is it raw, or just dry/peeling?

Well he can be a chewer... He lives with my boyfriend in a different city and is left outside while he showers. It is possible that he chews on wood and other not so good to chew on items. However, it seems to happen only spontaneously and he's left outside daily so I'm not sure how likely a culprit that is... It's usually accompanied with a peeling ( think sunburn on shoulders type of peeling) on his nose but that seems to be absent this go around. The stuff on the actual muzzle is more raw and seems to look a little more irritated ( more red then the usual pink that developes). I think he may lick his lips more often when he has it but other than that it doesn't seem to really bother him too much. Maybe he just needs some chapstick? Haha

If he's left outside every day then... maybe it is a sunburn? I've never seen a dog get sunburned so bad that they peel, but that would be where they'd get burned the worst... on the muzzle, where there is no hair. And it's still possible that he's chewing on something, but not doing it ALL the time. There's really no telling I'd personally start by spending some more time with him in the backyard to see if he starts chewing on something, or start looking around the yard for evidence of chewing.

You could also start putting sunscreen on him before he's left outside, and see if the problem returns.

I Appriciate the speedy responses. I don't know if you caught my last thread about him coughing but the vet decided that was an infection, prescribed antibiotics and he improved. He still coughs occassionally but not as often. Anyway while I was up there yesterday I felt diesels neck and his lymph nodes feel very large. I've called the vet and he's going in tomorrow at 11. I will ask about his nose thing then also. only been a couple of times to the vet and it's already too many. He mentioned that he might need to aspirated the nodes.

Thor's muzzle used to break out and get raw. It didn't looks as bad your dogs. But his was from using a plastic bowl. Bacteria builds up in the plastic. Once we switched to a metal bowl the problem disappeared. Glazed ceramic bowls are fine too.

Haha when we got diesel we'd heard about the trouble with plastic so we've always used metal bowls.

Good news!

Diesel got a nearly clean bill of health! Vet said his lymph nodes looked good and he seemed very healthy other then his face which he said was caused by dermititis. Said Diesel actually HAD just gotten chapped and then he got a minor infection from it. Disel got a weeks worth of cephlexin and put me on "chapstick" duty which consits of a peroxide wash and thin neosporin rub. The vet said it would get licked off bur that enough should be left to keep it lubricated. Haha we'll see. In other news, there was a vet office cat on the counter who really was antagonizing Diesel, and though he REALLY wanted to teach that cat a lesson, he listened well to commands and left him alone. He's such a good boy!

Glad to hear it's nothing major I wonder why he's getting so chapped though? Is it very dry where you live? Well at least now you know what it is and how to prevent/treat it
