Tiny cut on ear - bleeding profusely!!
So we were playing laser tag in the house the other night. Cornelius zigged when he should have zagged and crashed into the wall. He's alright but he has this teeny tiny cut right on the tip of his ear (floppy). Well, my house looks like a crime scene!!! Is this an injury that is hard to come back from? I eventually took him to the vet because I could not stop the bleeding - every time he shook his head, it would open back up. He's bandaged now but the vet said that if it doesn't heal, it would require surgery?! I think surgery is a bit much but has anybody dealt with this kind of injury before? Sorry for the long post!

I would just keep an eye on it...Rowdy did the same to his ear in his crate a while back, and it eventually healed.

Sorry to hear about your boys injury.
Ears bleed a lot. Even the smallest of cuts make it seem as if they will need a hundred or so stitches!
I'm sure the ear will heal if you can keep it closed. That is where the problem lies though. Even a simple head shake can open the area up in 2 seconds flat.
If the taping doesn't work I'd ask the vet about some sort of liquid bandage or even a suture type glue (not sure of the technical term).
Hopefully he will be good as new in no time.

My Roxy girl had something similar as a puppy - tore the edge of her ear. It took a very long time to heal because every shake of the head would re-open the wound. I think she wore a bandaid for a year trying to get the darn thing to heal. The bandaid helped with the blood splatter. Good Luck

I know where you're coming from. Casper had a small scratch wound on his ear that bled and bled. It would just start to heal then he'd scratch and it would open up again. I was putting savlon or Germolene on it and it seems ot have done the trick but it's essential you try stop it from opening up.

Update: Well after about a week, Cornelius is on the mend. Flour works in a pinch to stop the bleeding but what really did the trick is EMT Gel. I had heard about it online and then went out and bought it. Wow! His ear started healing within 2 days use!! That's a definite for my first aid kit now.

I was gonna suggest the same thing! ZEE Medical supply was just in yesterday and told me about a new product like the emt gel, but it is single use, powder form. It works 10x better than the emt gel. I bought 2 packs just for the dogs, just in case. If ZEE supplies to your business, then I would opt for that instead. It also has a 3 yr shelf life. Not sure if you can purchase without a contract, but it may be worth a call.

It's called "wound seal". It comes in two sizes too, both single use packets with two doses in each pack. It's a bit pricey, 19.99 for the larger size, around 14.00 for the smaller, but for the blood bath that can ensue after a bad cut, it will stop the bleeding until you get to emergency.
She did say that a guy got his thump chopped off in a machine and this powder kept it from bleeding out, waiting on the paramedics. Also used it on a guy who had a gash in his leg, through an artery, and it even stopped that from gushing and spirting.
ZEE carries all industrial stuff, so all the meds are a lot stronger than what a pharmacy can carry. I live on their med and now gonna rely on the wound seal for my dogs!
