Question False Pregnancy & Heat

My girl had swelling of few of her nipples which vet said was false pregnancy July 5-8, 2009. She is/was due for her next the end of July or so..(maybe...she is 17m old so this would only be her 2nd heat). I asked the vet if that few days of a false preg would effect when she got her next heat, and the answer was: "not sure". Has anybody experienced this and could maybe help out with answer???

Something isn't quite right there... dogs go through false pregnancy, if they're going to have a false pregnancy, AFTER their heat cycle (about 8-10 weeks after, when a litter would be due from said heat cycle). Unless I am misreading what you've written, you seem to be saying that she's had a false pregnancy but you expect her heat cycle to come a couple of weeks after? Not going to happen If it was indeed a false pregnancy, her heat cycle has been and gone.

In that case, now is a very good time to have her spayed. Bitches that have false pregnancies have them because of hormonal abnormalities that mean they fail to come out of their heats normally. It's not that nice for the dog, and if she has that sort of abnormality, then she may suffer the same hormonal rollercoaster after every heat cycle.

False Pregnanc & Heat

Sorry, guess I was not clear here. She had her first heat in January and was a normal heat. Then we were visiting Florida and on July 5th we noticed one of her nipples was very swollen (3in x 2 in)and took her to the vet we used to use there. Vet said that didn't seem to be any cuts or infections and that a couple of her other nipples appeared a little puffy at skin level...but not swollen. Vet didn't know why, but said maybe a false preg even though was a long long time after her first heat. After couple days, the swelling was gone in the one large one and no more puffyness in any of them. Am very confused.

I think it would be rather strange for a false pregnancy so long - +6 months -after the event. That she might be coming back into heat, or close to back into heat, seems perhaps a more likely explanation.

Smile

i went thru the false pregnancy after every heat cycle Jewell went every 8 to 9 mths then exactly 6to8wks after the pretend litter came....ball...toys....all slept with us.....lasted about 2 weeks.......now with that being said...the nipple thing they will always look bigger 24/7 and more when the heat is ready to come...i made the mistake of not spaying... had her spayed a 6......

i would suggest spaying her 3 mths after a heat cycle....this is not healthy for her unless you are going to breed her.....and the heat cycles and all is a 4 week process then again 6 wks later if its a true false pregnacy...this is a sad thing to watch and put her thru

just my opinion...

Tresa - you are right, it is very sad to watch. My girl is going through it now. We just went for a walk, and she even tried to cuddle the little dog that came up to us, and she is usually very stand-off-ish to other dogs if she's not trying to dominate them.
