Bump on chin and jowels (SP?)

Hello friends - I have a 11 month old female who has a history of allergies, she now has these pimple like bumps under her chin and all round her mouth and sometimes they bleed, i don't see her itching or scratching them and they don't seem to bother her at all. It looks painful to me! Anyone know what they are? We have changed her food and we wipe her down after every walk to avoid as much pollen as possible. Any suggestions would be great!

sorry I can't be of any help , but I would let a vet look at it if it is bleeding . I would not want to take any chances . Hope it clears up soon .

Sounds like typical puppy boxer acne. Most of this is caused by bacteria getting into the skin pores. It appears on the chin, lips, nose and in the muzzle folds. Very typical of boxer puppies.

The best suggestions are:

Use metal or glass bowls and wash with soapy water after each use. Never plastic or porceline, harbors bacteria. Wash water bowls daily.

Wipe their mouths with a wet towel or baby wipe after every meal or treat session.

Put neosporin on the open sores. Do not use the kind with pain reliever in it. Very bad for dogs to ingest.

Be patient. The acne will diminish as the pup gets older. My 2 year old still gets one or two if I'm not diligent with wiping her mouth after meals.

If it doesn't clear up and gets out of hand (we had blood EVERYWHERE on the carpet, walls, couch, despite me washing hsi face twice a day putting neosporin on it, using metal bowls, washing them 2-3 times a day, etc and it went on for over a month) make a trip to the vet and a dose of antibiotics (usually Cephalexin) will clear it right up in a few days. Obviously antibiotics should not be over used, but for us one dose was all it took and they were gone and never came back. I will also say my boy broke out in them when I fed him bully sticks and he's allergic to beef so the dermatology vet said that was more than likely the culprit.

So I would say if it doesn't clear up in a few weeks to a month or it gets overly crazy to consider a short course of antibiotics to see if it may clear it up for good.

Good luck!

If you have and use an automatic dishwasher, I just throw food bowls and water bowl into the dishwasher nightly and it does all the hard work for me LoL.

Good luck!

Steeler had this very bad under his chin. They would bleed and fill with puss. I just used Neosporin when they opened. I was using metal bowls at the time. I have changed to plastic bowls and he has abosolutely NO achne.

Rudy is absolutely covered with bumps and pustules and it's getting worse everyday. I was actually going to post this same question. I wash her face twice a day and wash her metal bowls everyday. She has allergies and get a daily dose of benedryl - but at a loss with this.

I guess we go to the vet - knock on wood - we haven't been to the vet for months!

Thanks,
Diane

If your vet gives an antibiotic, remember you can ask for the RX and go to a local human pharmacy (if it's a human drug). Many of the RX's the vets prescribe are on the $4 RX plans at places like Wal-Mart and Target which can save you a bundle.

Good luck!

Johann used to get horrible red, inflamed bumps all over his jowls.

Turns out they were due to a beef allergy that led to infections (pretty much overnight). He snuck 1 bite of steak the other week and had a bunch of huge bumps within a few hours.
