Here are some pictures of Gus. I had to take him in today because he was so swollen. I have a pic of it. They said it was just swelling ( I was just making sure), and he needs to be caged. If he keeps swelling it could bust the incision open and cause lots of problems. He has had more energy today and I guess it doesn't hurt as much now, so he want's to go crazy.

Incision today (4 days post-op) with a little swelling at the top of the incision:

Swollen (today) and then it kinda spread out:

awww, poor Gus. I'm glad he is feeling more energetic, that has to be a good sign. Of course it makes it harder to keep him quiet then, but it is always better when you can see that boxer spirit. Continued vibes and prayers coming Gus's way.

Bad news about Gus :(
I just got a call from the surgeon with the results of Gus' tests and it's not good. She couldn't really answer my questions, but I go to see the internist Wednesday to talk to her. I just know it's not good. Gus has copper storage disease, also know as Hepatotoxicosis. She said it's very rare and they have only seen a few cases there. His copper level in his liver was over 500, and I think she said 100 is high. The biopsy also showed that he has microscopic vascular shunts. If he had a shunt you could see, they could go in and surgicially repair it, but they can't do anything for his. She told me they can treat the copper storage disease, but not cure it, he was just born like that. I am not sure what they do about the shunts, if anything. I am not sure on the treatment or if it will shorten his life. I can't find much on the internet either. She didn't say it to me, but it didn't sound good, and I don't know if he will live a shorter life If they can get the copper levels under control, they might be able to get his ALT level to come down. I guess I won't know anymore until Wednesday. I have been crying already. Sorry if this is all over the place. I love my boy so much. I guess it's good that we caught it now, because from the little info I could find on copper storage disease, they can just die suddendly if it's not treated. Please keep us all in your prayers, but especially my baby boy Gus.

Sarah, keep your chin up Talk to the internist on Wednesday and go from there. Do you think you should go to a vet teaching university? I will be thinking of you, Gus and Izzy. Don't forget, you are a good doggy mom and you will do what is best and make the right decisions.

Sarah, I'm so sorry to hear about Gus' condition. You know more now, and that is a good thing. Perhaps with a special diet, and supplements/medication, it can be managed. I keep you, Izzy and your Sweet Gus in my thoughts and prayers, loads of healing and positive vibes going out to Gus. I hope your appointment on Wednesday goes well, please keep us posted. And has hard as it is, I agree, keep your chin up. Walk the high road with your boy, and know that we are all rooting for him.
