Spindle Cell Tumor????

I know I don't post on here often, but my wife and I are avid readers, seems we are always too busy to post, maybe we should take the time to do it more often. Anyway, we found a lump the size of a quarter on Nacho's right shoulder blade a couple of days ago. We took him to the vet to have it aspirated and the test results came back that it was a malignant spindle cell tumor.

I have no real clue what this means as I was in shock when I heard it. Naturally I'm concerned about his prognosis and recurrence, has anyone had any experience with these? He's only a year old, much too young to be getting cancer!!!

Any advice or helpful information would be appreciated (even if it isn't the best news) I'd rather prepare myself for bad news....Thanks in advance!

Sorry you've had such bad news,1yr is way too young.
I don't know a great deal about the different types of tumours
Is your vet going to take it out,and what is the next plan of action??

Hi,
Our boxer girl, Sophie, has had 2 lumps that were determined to be spindle cell tumors removed from her front left leg. The first time it was the size of a ping pong ball, the second time the size of a pencil eraser. The first time it grew really fast. I didn't even see it until it was ping pong ball size. I fell her leg everyday now.

This is what we were told after the first removal. If the vet didn't get all of the tumor it would return in the same area. And 2 1/2 years later it did. He said they don't spread to other organs (so that is good news) but they have to be removed or they keep growing and the little fingers (like roots) go deeper and they can't get all of it. I asked him if the tumor will break open if it gets too big, he said they can. She didn't have to have chemo or anything just surgery.

She had regular old fashioned scalpel surgery the first time and laser surgery the second time. Hopefully with the laser more of it was removed. It was 2 1/2 years between surgeries. She was 9 when the second surgery was done and she did fine.

She is doing great today, running around playing like she is still 5 years old. Just have it removed ASAP so it doesn't get any bigger.

Hope this helps.

We are having it removed on Monday, so I will keep you updated. The vet said it's in a really good place for a tumor (as if there is one!) I guess she will be able to take a lot of the tissue around it so that's a good sign. Thank for all the helpful advice, kind words and good vibes!!

I have some experience with this. Austin had a peripheral nerve sheath tumor on his side, it was a spindle cell tumor. That means that the cells are shaped like spindles. As long as they get clean margins your baby should be ok. If not unfortunately the reccurance rate is pretty high. Aus ended up having two surgeries because they didn't get clean margins the first time, but his tumor was pretty large. Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

I don't know much about this type of tumor, my experience is with another type, but just wanted to say that Luke and I will be sending goog thoughts and wiggles your way. Hopefully they will be able to get all of it and your baby will be fine!

Talking Great News!

We got the test results back from the vet and essentially the lump ended up being a secondary reaction to an injection and not a tumor after all!!! We are so relieved, to say the least. The surgery went well and he was in considerable pain but is getting back to his usual self more and more each day.

We thank you all for your warm wishes and kind words!!!
