Unhappy Lucas just had a seizure

I was sitting on the sofa, using my laptop. Lucas was asleep across the back of the couch where he was looking out of the window. It his favourite place to lie.
Anyway he started rolling off the back of the sofa, which I took no notice of as he often falls of the sofa when is is asleep. Anyway he just kept rolling and rolled slowly on to the floor. I started to become alarmed when I could see that he seemed to be sort of stiff and not able to get his back leg out the the awkward position it was in. He let out a couple of whimpers and then lifted his head up. His eyes were rolling and there was a bit of foamy stuff around his mouth. By the time I got over to him he has coming round and he shook himself and seemed a bit disorientated but OK. He still seems a bit shook but fine.
I feel so bad for him. I was really scared. What will we do if it happens again.
He met up with his sister Molly again today and they were both brought for a walk together. I think he found it rather stressful both of them being on their leads until they got to where they could be let off.

Any advice would be helpful or from someone who has been through this and it worked out ok.
I don't want anything bad to happen to our lukie.

I did read up some other stuff on seizures and it seems they are common but what is the best emergency treatment and would Lucas snap while if he has one around the kids?

Re: Lucas just had a seizure

In my experience with seizures (none with a boxer) I just sit beside them and pet them and keep telling them it is ok and that they are a good boy. I've never had one snap but I can't say that this applies to all. After the tensing they have always seemed to be as good as new.

Re: Lucas just had a seizure

Seizures are so scary. How old is your pup? Some dogs will have one and never have another. My boy had multiple ones and has been on pheno for years. I would let my vet know and have him checked just to be sure he is ok. This is important for the vet to know. They usually come around on thier own and remain disoriented or tired for a bit. Seizures like this (non-heart related, etc.) do not shorten life span or quality of life but if he has more medication can help control them. Good luck

Red face Re: Lucas just had a seizure

My 7 year old male has had seizures for 2 years now. We have him on phenabarb and it has worked wonders. The problem that we have is BRUTUS had a cancerous tumor removed at the age of 2 and we feel it has gone to his brain now. Just recently we noticed that he slumps his head and his eyes are rolled in the back of his head. Sometimes he is just fine but most of the time he has a slumped head and red inner eyelids. I am afraid that his time with us is almost to a close now. We will be taking him to the vet soon to see if there is anything that we can do for him. If not, its going to be a tough decision for us.

Just remember that seizures are not always a bad thing and are very common in boxers. Take your baby to the vet and have him\her checked and get them on some meds. The meds will sometimes totally make them go away and your dog will be happy and healthy without worrying you.

Re: Lucas just had a seizure

Hi, Thanks for your reply.
We discovered what we think may have caused his seizure. We found a CD earlier that day that he had been chewing on. My husband said that this may have caused a seizure as there are heavy metals in the plating on the CD.
He has been fine since. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Re: Lucas just had a seizure

Hi, Thanks for asking about Lucas. When the seizure happened I planned to take him to the vet the very next day. I talked to the breeder (Lucas's Granny) who said to leave it and see if it happens again. Somebody else on the board said to wait and see if it happens a second time. I don't want to put him through blood tests if he doesn't absolutely have to have them. Hopefully he will never have another seizure. The breeder is registered with the Irish Kennel Club who insist that very strict guidelines are followed with regards to breeding. So this lady must know her stuff. Lucas is also registered with the IKC but I would have to apply to breed him and they have some very tough criteria. The IKC are known as one of the worlds best Kennel Clubs. I have complete faith in what Lucas's breeder advises.

Thumbs up Re: Lucas just had a seizure

Thank You, He seems to be fine and he hasn't had a sign of another seizure since.
I wonder if it really could have been the heavy metals in the CD?
