Darkened skin, Patchy spots pink and black!

Our two year old boxer bitch is generally in very good health. She has a varied diet and we try to ensure that she gets all of her vitamins and nutrients.

About 2 months ago she developed a rash of red spots on her belly. We took her to the vets and he gave her antibiotics and a steroid injection.

They started to go but didn't clear up completely and then she started to get new spots, this time they started red but then they went black and the spot looked as though it was going moldy!

She's since had another course of antibiotics which did get rid of all spots, but the vet admitted that he had no idea what it was so we don't just want to go back to him without doing some research.

Her skin has gradually started to turn black and she's starting to losing some hair. She has a few round bald spots with black skin underneath and also a large patch of black with thinned out hair on one side of her back.

We're at a loss as to what's causing this because on the parts of her coat that aren't affected it looks really healthy.

Does anybody have any ideas what this could be?

Thanks,

Mel & Kev

PS we've frontlined her and we haven't seen any evidence of fleas so I don't think it could be a flea allergy.

Re: Darkened skin, Patchy spots pink and black!

My girl also had large raised red spots on her stomach, I thought they were red ant bites.(not so sure now) The red spots have since cleared. She also has three small bald patches on her feet the size and shape of a small coin. The skin is black and shows no sign of new hair growth. I have started her on duck and potato. Like your girl, my girl's coat looks healthy except for these three spots, and she has never had fleas. She has had these bald patches for about two months now. They are not getting any better, but have not worsened. She is due to be altered in two weeks and I will ask the vet what she thinks is causing this and let you know what she says. Lisa

Could she have mange or ring worm? Do a search on here.

Re: Darkened skin, Patchy spots pink and black!

Many thanks for your replies. We have decided (or should I say Kev has decided ) to take her to the vets tomorrow as the bald patches and the black spots are getting worse, even though the red spots have now disappeared. She is licking her skin loads which is probably making her hair loss worse.

We will be careful not just to accept the 'take these antibiotics' answer that the vets usually come up with when they're not sure what it is!

Thanks again.

Mel

I have no idea what it could be but what about allergies to carpet or if she spends alot of time outside to grass or something else that is outside. I would also recommand going to another vet for a second opinion.
