Griffin has stage 3 mast cell cancer

My six hear old had a mass/lump removed from his next last Wednesday. We got the biopsy results back today. It was a Stage III mast cell tumor.

They said there was some evidence that it had already metastasized. They said something else about his lymph nodes but I don't remember.

They will start chemo injections either this Saturday or the following ones, depending on when they can get the medications into the office. We decided that if he tolerates it well and it doesn't wreck his quality of life, we will try it. If it causes him to suffer, we'll stop. He will also get prednisone.

The vet said with the chemo there is a 57% chance he will live 1-2 more years. Without, it's 6 months.

My husband are leaving him in about an hour for a two-week trip to Italy. Needless to say this will put a damper on him. But he'll be cared for by my trusted sister and parents, so that makes it a little better.

Does anyone have any experience with Stage III mast cells? I could really use some positive thoughts right now.

We have just begun chemo treatments with Lizzie. They can have reactions, but as Wanda said typically not as severe as humans and usually they are things that can be treated, such as diareah and nausea. Lizzie had severe diareah over the weekend and ended up back at the vet yesterday to be put on fluids all day. She has made a complete turn around today and is doing much better. I'm sure every dog is different but fortunately remission can often be achieved. Keep the faith. You will be in our thoughts and prayers...

I just got the call from the vet's assistant today that my Lily's tumor was Mast Cell and is in the middle stage. She had 5 tumors removed and the 5th one was the bad one. I even saw it myself after it was removed and it had roots.

She said it is very aggressive. I just dont know what to make of it. THey didnt suggest chemo to me. Just to watch and see if it grows back. And that it could spread. I just tont know what to think. I am in a daze about all of this.

So it looks like we are in this together right now. I will let you know of anything new I hear. I will be calling my vet tomorrow for more details.

THis sucks.
