Need help to up-load pictures

Can anyone give me any advice on why I can't seem to up-load any of my pictures. I am fairly new to the site. Everytime I try to up-load a picture I am told it is too big. I can't seem to find any way of making them smaller. Anyone had this problem and solved it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I want to show off my baby !
