Computer not recognizing DVD's

I went on a whale watch this past Thurs with my mother and my aunt and we all took a ton of photos. I decided I'd burn all of our photos onto one DVD (since the DVD can hold a LOT more than a normal CD) for everyone so we'll all have each other's photos. Using DVDs for photo storage works perfectly fine on my computer, but my mother's computer won't even recognize that a DVD was put in. If I put in a CD with photos on it, it works fine.

My parents don't use their computer very often and the one they have is on the older side. Although I don't know how old it is, I know it's a Dell. It was a hand me down from the company that my father works at.

Is it possible that the computer is to old to recognize the DVD format? Is there a setting that I can use to enable this?

It sounds as though their computer has a CD player and not a DVD player (probably written on the front of it). If that is the case, no, there is no setting you can enable that will allow it to recognise a format that was invented years later.

If it isn't written on the front whether its a CD or DVD, you should be able to find out from the computer control panel (hardware), or else go to Dell's site and let them scan the computer for its components.

Thanks! That's the problem. I had them check it and it does only say Compact Disc on the front, nothing about DVD. Guess we'll either have to go back to CD's or upgrade to DVD.

Another option may be one of those little USB drives. They are very easy to use and can store a ton of photos. Did you get any good pics of the whales?

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into that.

I just posted a thread in the Photography forum with links to some of my photos from these trips. You can check them out here.... http://www.boxerworld.com/forums/sho...38#post1196038
