I've sorta had that happen. In the summer of 2002 dh took the girls to Florida for a week. Oh, so lovely to have the house to myself so my first night alone I decide I'll take the pups on a walk and enjoy the evening. I get on the porch and start down the steps when the jerk of the leash causes me to lose my balance and down I go. I sat there for a few minutes, sure that my ankle was broken. I then crawled on all fours into the house. After a while the pain decreased, but it was still horrible. I had no one to help me, I had to drive myself to the hospital with a 5 speed. Not fun. Lucky for me it was only a sprain, but still it hurt.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

so many similar incidents! I suspected so!
Thanks for the happy birthday scorpio! I went and had sushi.
The story about Ponya is the same as Lily. She just kept bouncing around!
Well, I was just reassessed today and the outlook is not great. It hasnt improved so the ortho suspects meniscus (cartilage) damage in addition to the MCL damage. The extent is unkonwn...Surface pain is gone, but i can only bend it 60%. Unfortunately MRI's aren't as easy to comeby as in the US. But arthoscopy is. The government got rid of MRI equiment due to cutbacks. Stupid, i know.
So now i need to decide if i want to go to a private hosptial and have the MRI at full price since (murphys law) its the only time in my life i dont have insurance. ANd then see what it says, or do arthoscopy (free). Or do both. Government hospitals are actually very good here in HOng KOng. Often better than private. Hmm decisions decisons. In the meantime i am having physio and Lily is snoring on her bed.
Strange, doctor said arthoscopy is general anesthesia. Is it usually general or local in the US.?? My tonsellectomy was general here too.
Im sure lots of you have had the procedure...???

Wow so many decisions, I hope what ever you decide, all goes well. I know doctors here always want to put you under, gives them more money. Myself I think I would want to be put under. i was lucky only to have MCL damage. I suffer now with my knee and people say I have a slight limp. When I am out in the field with a bunch of dogs I try and stay by a tree or something, I am so scared of being hit again. Good Luck!

Just keep in mind the the risks associated with general anesthetic are much greater than with a local. (The risks are still small, however there are thousands of people each year who have complications from a general, and some even die.)
In addition, it's a lot tougher on your system and recovery time is lengthened after using a general.
Using a local may require some more courage in terms of being "awake" for your procedure, however it is a better choice for your body! (I myself would not voluntarily subject myself to the risks of a general unless it was necessary.)
Just my two cents worth, and I hope all goes well!

My goodness they sure get you out of hospitals Fast back in the states!
So i decided i will go ahead with the procedure and i check into the hospital on the 17th. THe orthoscopy is on the 18th. Here, they like to keep you for a few days. I am happy with them being so thorough.
I will have general anesthesia. Its what the doctor prefers, so i dont really want to argue! ANd i dont want to watch the twisting or hear the grinding surround sound!
Poor lily hasnt had any long walks except last sunday my friend drove us to the doggie park. But she's enjoying sleeping next to me on the livingroom floor (where my bed is now!).
Am very curious as to the extent of the damage and where it is. They are thinking meniscus tear and MCL. They say ACL is loose as well but suspect that's from years of soccer!

Just want to wish you good luck with your operation and I would go under too. The one and only time I went under I was like you up and about like nothing happened. There will probably be a lot of physiotherapy afterwards for sure. Be thinking about you.

I am a nurse. What is your doctor recommending? I know that this is probably too late, but if the doc feels that you need surgery to repair the ligament damage, then having the MRI would be a waste of your money. Just a thought.

yup, that's what he thinks, Jaz. My knee hasnt gotten better or worse and the paint description is that of a meniscus tear and MCL damage. I think the MRI would be a waste of money too.
Thanks!
I go in on Wednesday!

Hope you're feeling better. No leg injuries here. Morphy has split my lip several times. Twice in one day. He gets very excited when human company arrives, spastic is more like it. I always hug him(that's what he thinks) for the first few seconds when company arrives. I'm really just holding him back from jumping onto them. He loves affection. So he always throws his head up. That thick, hard skull of his....get's me just right. You think I'd learn.
We love 'em even if they're pain-in-the-butts sometimes, don't we? So we're sending((((healing vibes)))).

Hi guys, I'm back!
I got out today (saturday). Well after waking up from the general anesthesia really groggy, gagging, and unable to move(like a horrible hangover without the headache) it ended up being something called "Plica".
How weird! Its a weird thing where your knee doesnt fully form when you are a fetus. It has extra really thick membranes. And people who have Plica and have hard blows to the knee get what happened to me...
Basically when Lily bashed me, she knocked the Plica and it got in the way of my knee joint moving. There was also scar tissue over something that starts with an "s" and it is supposed to give lubrication to the joint but it didnt.
So all the Plica was shaved away as well as some other soft tissue.
If i had gotten the MRI it wouldnt have shown the Plica and i wouldnt have had a torn meniscus so it would have left us all wondering hmmm...
Im supposed to walk without my brace on my crutches still for 2 weeks, but i think i need the brace at home to protect my knee from Lily. She was a dangerous mexican jumping bean when i arrived home.
LILY!!!!!!!!!!!!
