I have to have CT Scan and possible surgery
I am kind of freaking out. I went to the doctor today because I had a lump on the side of my neck. It has been there about 8-9 months and I saw a doctor for it before who told me it was swollen lymph gland. He said it must have been left over from when I was sick. I told him I had not been sick but he kind of blew me off.
This was back in Oct and it never went away. I went to a different doctor today and he is sending me for a CT scan and then to a surgeon.
He said either it's "nothing or it's really slow growing cancer." He followed up with the good news "at least you aren't dead"...meaning dead already because I have had it so long. He brought up lymphoma too. As you can imagine I am freaking out. I am only 27 years old.
Does anyone know what a CT scan would show?

Mandy, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I understand how fearful you are feeling. Try to just work on getting through this and try not to anticipate bad news. Can you call the doctor's office tomorrow and have someone answer your questions? Because it would be best if you got your information "from the horse's mouth" from someone who is familiar with your case instead of speculating from outside sources.
I'll say a prayer for you that you get only good news and the lump is nothing.
Best regards and sending healing vibes,
Genie

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. Try not to worry too much, most of the time things like this are benign and nothing to worry over. It could be an internal sebaceous cyst (cyst of the oil gland), a lipoma (fatty deposit) or sometimes the lymph nodes just have issues of their own. It is possible to get an infection just in one lypmh node that fails to resolve and it can either be resolved with antibiotics or surgical excision. Often times these are removed as a matter of course if they are bothersome. Most likely if it really was cancer it would have caused other problems and/or symptoms by now.
I have to say I think your treatment by your doctor was rather callous and I would find a new physician=/
Sending positive vibes your way!

VELA - I read your post to my mom and husband and I think it made all of us feel better. I was trying to think of other things it could be.
It's amazing how close my boxer girls are sticking to me right now. I was sobbing on the phone with my mom and both the girls came in to lick my face and lay with me.

I do medical transcription for a living so I do lots of charts on lots of patients and most of the time these are the causes =) I know things like that can be REALLY stressful when you just have no idea what could be going on. The CT can show fluid or dense tissue which gives them a better idea of what it might be. They may recommend a fine needle aspiration biopsy as well to see if surgery is something you need or want. Depending on the location it could also be a lump on your thyroid gland which is not uncommon either and is generally not serious.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and a good outcome! Keep us posted so we don't worry.
I really think your doctor acted like a jerk saying that to you though. What a horrid thing to say to someone!

I hope it turns out to be a benign lump! Try to just take it one step at a time. I know that's not easy to do, especially since your doctor said what he did! Not knowing what it is is the hardest part!
sending healing and calming vibes your way~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What the hell kind of doctor would tell you at least you're not dead? I'd smack him. I have a swollen gland in the back of my neck that never went away. It never will. It was from a sinus infection I had years and years ago. I also had a lump removed from the front of my neck, and that was a sebasious (sp?) cyst. I hate when doctor's worry you without knowing what it is. I hope everything turns out ok for you.

Mandy, I agree with the crowd. Your doctor was insensitive and irresponsible for saying anything at all without knowing the facts.
There was no reason to scare you like that! I will be praying for
you. Hang in there and try to think of other things to keep your mind off it for now. Keep us posted!
