Ozzy and I want to send you and Duke all our best wishes!!
Don't be embarrassed about crying, I've broken down many times on visits to the vets and Duke is your baby so of course you are going to be upset. Everyone here feels the same about their furbabies and I hope you keep updating us on how things are going.

Jill

When I read your post I was definately thinking that your boy's problems sounded like a reaction to the demodex treatment. My dog Tango developed hair loss this spring/ summer and even though skin scraping tests were negative, my vet was said that it looked like Demodex. Becuase the treatment can be hard on dog's, especially old guys like Tango, he said that he didn't want to treat him. I was very grateful that he didn't want to treat my senior with a caustic medication and dips. I was, however, not comfortable with not doing anything to treat him. So... I did some research and found a therapy to boost his immune system and I can tell you that 3 months later his demodex is gone!! I treated his balds spots with tea tree oil 2 times daily(watching them for excessive dryness, though) and I started supplements of Astragalus and Viola from Seven Forrests as well a vitamin C and a Super B complex. Tango also has arthritis in a dysplastic hip. I think that the pain he was experienceing from the hip was the trigger that stressed him and suppressed his immune system. So you may want to take a look at possible stressers on your dog's body. Good luck to you both and happy healing!

I'm so sorry to hear....

I'm so sorry to hear Duke had to go through that. I am very glad to hear that he is doing and feeling better.

It's okay to break down and cry (even at the vet's office) and if people can't understand TOO BAD FOR THEM though I don't understand it. That means they have no heart! I was sitting here with tears in my eyes over this because these boxers are like our children and anybody who wouldn't be upset that her child is hurting doesn't deserve to have them (this includes pets)! With that said, you go ahead and cry when you need to and just remember that we are all here for you. Don't be ashamed or embarassed....we have all been there and undoubtedly will be there again.

Take care of Duke and you too!!

Unhappy Duke Update

The vet just called me and said that I should ask for my money back on Duke. She did another skin scrape today and says his demodex has gotten worse. So now he has to go on daily ivermectin and weekly dips. I am starting to get really scared about his chances of survival. I have been doing everything possible, in addition to his dips I have been giving him a bunch of the immune system boosters suggested here on boxerworld. It seems like everyone on here has been able to get rid of this more easily than he has. Anyone know what his chances are for recovery?

Jill -

We are all sending good thoughts for a speedy recovery for Duke. When I went through it with Mac my vet warned me it was going to get worse before it got better. Hang in there!

Did Ram&LexisMom reply to this post or have you talked to her about her experiences? Lexus had a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE case of mange and she's got through it. Check out her photo album for the photos..

Jill, my Am Staff had demodex so badly that after 6 weeks of dips they (vets) wanted to put him to sleep. I convinced them to give him 1 more dip (I was just going to another vet I wasn't going to have him put down!) And low and behold on the 7th dip it finally cleared up. I know it is really stressfull and your poor sweetie must be feeling awful but you have to be patient. Sometimes it is really hard to get rid of but if you keep trying maybe sucess is right around the corner. I would definitly get your money back and make the breeder pay for the treatment but I wouldn't give them back your dog for any reason. Keep hangin in there!! Our thoughts are prayers are with you and Duke.

Thank you all for your advice, support and prayers. I was really emotional and scared when I wrote my last post. After I posted it I drove straight to the vet to pick him up. He acts like he feels fine. Still loves to eat, play, kidneybean, dig, jump, run...damage the house . He just doesn't have much hair on his head. I plan on putting up a picture early next week. I like to think that since he doesn't seem to feel sick at all that maybe he is going to be able to recover.
