I broke my leg yesterday :(

I fell off my horse, not a hard fall at all.....but managed to land wrong and broke my leg/ankle in 3 places. It will need surgery and I'm out of work for quite a while.

Poor Johann was there when it happened (in the car) and kept howling because he could hear me crying. He keeps following me around, but has been blissfully careful of my leg so far.

So sorry to hear about your injury!!
If I can offer some advice......
I have broken quite a few bones and have never done as told regarding my recovery and am paying for it dearly now and will so for the rest of my life.
I'm a bit of a work-a-holic and have always went straight back to work and didn't do as I was told by the docs.
THIS WAS WRONG.
I had my worst break (elbow) in June of 2007 and had to have surgery to put it all back together. I have a 5 in screw and wires. Broke it on a Tuesday and continued working until about 20 minutes prior to surgery on Friday. Took the weekend off and was back out working on Monday.
My arm hurts every single day anywhere from aches to intense burning pain. I have been told that it was because I didn't take care of it and continued to use it. The cast gives *some* people a sense of security.
I believe that it is the hardware inside and was told that I could have it removed after a year if I insisted but never did. To do so would require another surgery and "time-off" for healing. (Like that was gonna happen!!). LOL
Take your pain meds as prescribed. Don't wait a second later. Staying ahead of the pain is very important.
Have plenty of ice packs on hand and use them even if you don't think you need them. You WILL need them.
I broke the same elbow a few years prior (different bone) and my shoulder on the same side. Never got full use of my left arm and miss it.
I hope your surgery and recovery is quick and as pain free as possible.
REST REST REST and follow your post op instructions to the letter.

Thanks everyone. I'm still hanging in there, waiting for surgery. Hopefully will be the middle to end of next week (depends on how much the swelling has gone down).

Johann has been trying to take good care of me. Unfortunately that translates into crying and whining when I'm trying to sleep because he's worried about me. At least he's being careful around my leg...not sure it could handle a boxer punch right now.

Been there, done that, hated it! Had a tib/fib fracture, surgery with rod and screw placement. Missed 6 months of work. In fact, because of my accident, that is how I got my Greta. I was having much difficulty with physical therapy and learning how to walk again. Was getting depressed, that I would never be normal again. My doctor wrote a prescripition for a puppy. Obviously, he knew me well. Found Greta, and life was never the same again! Chasing after a puppy was the best therapy I could have ever had! Like Cami said, take your pain meds, do your therapy and rest. Remember, there is no better nurse that a Boxer! Good luck, and a fast recovery.
