Unhappy Need advice

Hello everyone,

I need some advice and I hope you can help. I am not asking for sympathy, but I need some help. I take a way to work that dogs pop up on the way at times. There is a highway 45 in texas where dogs are around. One area specifcially. It is along I-45 before Lamar if northbound and southbound past overton. There is a fence along that is supposed to stop the dogs but they go under it all the time. It is near an area where people live in dumps (literally dumps) and no one ties up their dogs and they run free mating and everything else. While my issue is that while driving to work I am stupid and look for dogs to help. A couple of mornings I saw dogs at the side and scared them under the fence and home. Difference mornings twice I saw dogs in the median. The first time I stopped and didn't try to scare the baby but it bolted across the highway when it saw me and survived and I got them home (almost got killed though). This morning I saw 5 dogs crossing the highway into the median. Well I stopped to try to help (one was a chi) and they saw me and bolted across the highway. One was killed and the others made it but tried to get in the road to help the last one who was killed on impact. I scared them from running back in the highway and scared them home. The owners of course wouldn't even acknowledge that the dog killed was theirs. I told him I wasn't saying the dog did something but asked him to try to keep them away from the fence. They said no all our dogs are fine must be someone else's. Of course they were running the neighborhood when I left. There are tons of dogs running that area so I can't call the pound or all those dogs would be my fault when they were put down.

My problem is should I just either go a different direction or should I when I see them in the middle of the highway since I just seem to scare them should I just keep going and pray they will be fine or what!

I need advice I don't know what to do and I am not asking or sympathy because I know that baby died because I stopped.

Laura

This is a tough one. I am not sure what I would do either. I would probably still go that way because turning your back on something doesn't make it go away. I would find another way to help the situation.

I know you said you don't want to get the animal shelter involved but something needs to be done. There is no reason for dogs to be getting killed on the road like that.

Maybe you could find out who owns the fence and volunteer to help make it more secure. Depending on how long the fence is, maybe you could do it yourself? Making it so the dogs couldn't go under it would certainly help the situation.

If you can't find out something to do soon, I would definately get the humance society involved. If the dogs did end up being euthanised, at least they wouldn't getting killed on the road, dying a painful lonely death. Also, hopefully the humane society would be able track down the owners and issue fines or prevent them from getting more animals.

No matter what you decide to do, there is most likely going to be some consequences to someone, hopefully that will be to the dumb people who own these dogs and allows them to be in that situation. Good luck.

Bless your heart for trying to help, unfortunately you can only do so much. I would contact animal control. These poor creatures are not only a menace to themselves but to the drivers on the road. Who's to say that the next time they run across not only will they get killed but someone in a vehicle as well. I agree wholeheartedly that the euthanizing of animals is heart breaking but a long time ago I interned at Dade Animal Control in Miami, FL. While having to put animals down was gut wretching, I kept telling myself that it was much better for someone like me to do it humanely than for them to die a horrible death in the streets.

Best of luck to you no matter what you decide to do. And thank you for caring about them so much.

Laura, I agree with RoxiesEcho. You sound like a very kind person with a heart bigger than most. It's definitely tough to handle this situation, but I think calling in animal control would be the most humane way to handle it all around.

Best of luck.

I donīt know how things work over there but I would maybe call the local people as these dogs are a danger to the traffic. Any driver could brake or swerve to avoid one of these dogs and cause a serious accident.
And as the others have said call animal control, they should not be wandering free.
