Just for a different point of view.. I have one older male Caesar 11 yrs who is the alpha, his daughter Cleo 9 yrs & Molly monster 2 yrs. Molly & Cleo play ALL the time! They love each other and I think Cleo has taken the role of mommy to Molly. It is very cool to watch the way all my dogs relate. While Caesar has taught all the girls to defend themselves (through play ) Cleo has taught Molly everything else. They also eat right next to each other with no problem and play with all the same toys which are always purchased in 3's.

If you already have a female, why can't you rescue another female?

Here is a thread that was done on rescue and pairing 2 females. This is a great thread with a lot of breeders and rescue workers giving their point of view. Debbie Magon and Sabrina Jay also responded to the thread. hope it helps

I had an 6 year old female that was dominate towards strange dogs. I brought in another female puppy. The puppy's breeder warned me about have two of the same sex together, but agreed to let me have the puppy. She indicated that she had a mom and a daughter that never did get along and also had good experiences with multiple dogs of the same sex. My older dog has since passed away and I recently have added a male puppy because his breeder, although there wasn't a female available, suggested a male would be best. Both of my pairings were or are currently successful. However, looking back I think it is because of the role that the middle dog has played. She is very easy going, not dominate, and does not get jealous. She can be such a loner that sometimes we joke if she even misses us when we are gone. Both the older dog and the new puppy are/were very "needy" and love to be in your company. I think we may have had more "issues" if it wasn't for Lucy's laid back personality.

All of this feedback is great!!! So many different experiences to relate to ! We are still trying to find the right match for Nestle and I suppose it will happen when everything is just perfect. We are hoping to do so through a rescue organization. Thanks for all the feedback!!!

Thank you all so much for posting such a helpful topic, and for all of your suggestions. I have taken all of them into account, and this weekend I picked up my second boxer, a male. Basically, I have learned that some (but certainly not all) boxers of the same sex can have issues, but that a lot depends on the individual dog's personality and circumstances. So, I simply let my female boxer make the decision for me. I took her to the breeder and watched her interact with the puppies and other dogs. The ultimate decision to get a boy was made because he seemed to "click" with my girl, not just on the dog's sex. They have done nothing but play since, and I couldn't be happier. If you have the opportunity, I would suggest allowing the boxers to play together for as long as possible and observe. Thanks again for participating in such a wonderful resource!
