Want to get my puppy a friend...

Hello Everyone!

My boxer puppy is seven months old. I want to get him a friend so that he will always have someone to play with but I don't know what type of breed to go with. He LOVES smaller dogs but I want to get a small dog who will have as much energy as he does so that they can play well with each other. Any suggestions?

The Boston Terrier comes to mind as one that is small but not too small, and FULL of energy. But there are SO many breeds... you might want to take the breed selector quiz on the DogBreedInfo site -- that will at least give you a lot of ideas.

Whatever you decide on, it would be better to wait until your pup is a bit older before adding another puppy to the mix. The general recommendation is to wait until the first puppy is 2 years old before getting another one. That way the older dog can be a role model for the new puppy, since the older one has already had 2 years of training and bonding-time with the owner. Plus, at 7 months old your guy is just hitting his "terrible teen" stage -- probably not the best time to be adding to the family

I fully agree with the above post...wait until your boxer has reached the 2 year mark. You have lots of training ahead of you and you don't wait to stretch yourself too thin with another puppy.

I also agree that a Boston is a great playmate for a boxer. A French Bulldog also comes to mind. They both are big dogs in little packages and are able to keep up pretty well with the antics of a boxer.

Agreed! Waiting, at least a little while, is probably best. All may seem well now, but you'll still have to battle the "teenager" phase...

What about getting him another boxer. And, I agree with the others...that waiting is probably best. My Buster is 7 months old and definitely giving me some "teenage" problems now. It's to the point that I'm wondering if I shouldn't put off fostering for the time being until I can get things settled down with Buster.
