Male or Female
I have recently lost my Dharma Girl and god how i miss her. I posted on Rainbow Bridge saying how hard it is to get another boxer in Australia as good breeders can be hard to find with available puppies... My question is.. and stupid as i am sure its an individual thing, but i was thinking of getting a male puppy as Dharma was my special girl and this baby can be my special man.. I have never owned a "dog" as such only female dogs all my life, and Dharma was my first boxer and will never go another breed... Again i know one is not better than the other but some advise would be great... x thanks guys, all of you on here have been great throughout my loss. thank you...

I say that if you are thinking you want a boy, you need to get a boy. Aniah is my first female dog, and I swear that I have never had any of the problems I have with her with any of my male dogs. My childhood dog was a very aggressive fixed male mutt. He hated everyone that was not a family member so we always had to take great precautions with him, and fortunately we never had any problems. But at home he was very well behaved, listened and followed rules beautifully. My Cody is so sweet I can hardly believe he is real. He has always shamed so easily and the harshest you ever had to get with him was to say he was a Bad Boy, you didn't even have to say it loudly. Oh lord the ears would fall back the nub would tuck in and I swear if anyone who didn't know us saw him they would think that he got beaten with a stick twice a day everyday and three times on Sunday(Of course he never was). He was the easiest dog I have ever trained.
My Aniah on the other hand. She doesn't listen, does what she pleases and I swear she thinks she should run the house. She has finally realized standing up to Daddy isn't a good idea (however she still does it every now and then), and she still challenges me everyday. She surfs the counter something fierce, I have lost countless sandwiches as I reach for the baggie to put it in, she jumps up and steals it. She has gotten chicken breasts as I look in the cupboard for the salt and pepper. She also loves to chew my shoes and clothes and bras. And if you call her a Bad Girl, she just looks at you like "Puh-lease, who cares what you think" She is getting better, I have a pretty good leave it command for her. She is nowhere near as naughty as she used to be, but she has been so much harder than any of my males were.

I was debating whether to get a female after I lost my first male boxer, who I absolutely adored. He was a very gentle, loving, laid back boxer. I asked breeders to describe the differences between a male and female boxer and loved one interpretation: Males ask, "What can I do to please you?" while females ask, "What can you do to please me?" She also added, "They don't call the females bitc*** for nothing." I ended up with another male boxer!

Thank you for your posts... I think i will go a male, as i have been looking at a little man that is only 2 weeks old and also other females... i automatically go back to look at him.. he was my first choice so i should stick to my gut feelings.. He is also different in colour to my Dharma, she was a fawn with black mask, and the little boy is flashy, red brindle... Also in Australia now they dont dock the tails, therefore this is why it is difficult to find a breeder. So he will even have a tail...

Interesting. Barron was fawn with black mask and white markings, and Zeus is a dark brindle with very little white markings. However, I love that all four of his boots are white!

I have no experience with female boxers, but I've heard that they're much more independant than males. I've also heard that males are more clingy than females. In my case that's 100% true with Riley. He's almost always right behind me whenever I move around the house. It doesn't matter if I go into the kitchen, the bedroom, or the bathroom, if he's awake he'll get up to follow me. Sometimes he'll be nice and comfy in bed and he'll hear or see me leave the room, but he give me a couple of minutes to see if I come right back. If not, he'll get up to come find me. I wouldn't want it any other way though.
Mason is more independant than Riley, but he does follow me around a little bit. More times than not though he's off doing his own thing. He loves playing solo with his toys.
If your gut is telling you to get a boy, then by all means get a boy. You know you're going to cherish and love the new puppy whether it's a boy or a girl so why not try the "other side" to the breed!

I've always been partial to females. Mine all have an attitude, but that suits me fine as i show them and do agility. They however are both the most velcro dogs ever. Follow me everywhere etc etc. They listen to me quite well when I tell them what to do, but not so much when daddy does. All in all they are quite well behaved, and its nice to not worry about marking on furniture with them. I've heard males are more "sweet", but now that we have a male pup i really dont see a difference in the two sexes love wise. I'm dreading the days when he grows up and start marking....

I am partial to the males. My Max is the most calm, stoic love bug ever. And by the way he has NEVER EVER MARKED!!
On the other hand there is Riley who we call the hulligan. She is so into everything and way more high maintenance. We love her but our next and future will always be males.

Get the little boy Boxer. Although I had female Labs as a kid and wanted a female, I wanted to rescue and when I found Oscar on Petfinder, the rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward 9 months to the adoption of Mali, the hot TaMali, the devil with a blue dress on, Good Golly Miss Mali. She is a pistol, a little dickens, a counter surfer, a shoe theif, destroyer of bras. As for being a velcro dog, Oscar is much more the velcro dog than Mali. Get the boy. I think he has already chosen you. I hope you do not get bruised shins from his wagging tail.
