Question BYB question

If a pet shop sells puppies that they bought directly from a breeder are they still classed as BYB's?

Or is it a case of - a good breeder wouldn't sell to a 'Middle-man'?

I have learned that you cannot sell to shops etc if you are a KC member, which explains to me the real reason why Rogue wasn't registered.

I got Rogue from a pet shop that buys directly from breeders, & I'm now wondering if buying from them is encouraging BYB's?

According to the woman who owns the shop, she had to go through a lot of red tape before being allowed to sell, & she only ever has 10 dogs at a time, & people are always in there buying. It's actually a very busy small shop.

I love going in there & seeing all the furbabies, but now I've learned so much from BW, I don't want to encourage the wrong sort of thing.

I need to know about this, in case I buy again.

IMHO, I would say most certainly any breeder that would sell to a pet shop would be one not to frequent in my book.

Responsible breeders do not sell to pet stores - ever.

And in many places, it is against the code of ethics of the parent breed club to do so (so if a breeder does, they risk disciplinary action).

The vast majority of puppies sold in petstores don't even come from BYBs. Sorry to tell you, but 95% of them come from puppy mills. That's just the reality. There was a thread recently about UK puppy mills (mostly in Ireland, in fact) and some good links posted there. I can't locate it for the moment though, but take a look at this link instead. Location doesn't matter - a US puppy mill is much the same as UK one, or a Hungarian one, etc www.prisonersofgreed.org

I agree no reputable breeder would sell their dogs to pet shops. Of course, unfortunately I am learning the hard way myself, after getting a pup from a BYB. I did know better as I am a cat breeder that shows and fully know all the consequences of BYB's. However, in my case, this person also breeds cats (the same breed as I do) and came with references from other cat breeders. She checked out perfect as a cat breeder. I can't figure out why she would not be the same with her dogs???

By the way a pet store near me sells boxers "from reputable breeders" and charges $1000 for them. They even claim to give a better health guarantee than the breeders themselves do! I can't imagine most breeders charging that for their pet quality pups. This store is a big scam. One lady I met purchased a dog from there which clearly was a yellow lab and showed me her papers which were labeled golden retriever!!!

Any responsible breeder would be screening potential purchasers thoroughly so that rules out sending them to a pet shop. They'll sell them to anyone who can pay.
I fail to understand how people who claim to love their animals can produce puppies and have them sent off to a pet store where anyone could buy them. If you wouldn't send your own dog off to live with perfect strangers how could you do that to it's offspring?

So I'm guessing there are no laws against BYB's then??

Coz otherwise why would the vets that are next door to the shop that I got my furbaby from, work with these people?

The vet even has a dog from them!!

It seems like such a well run, & nice place. None of the pups in there ever look ill. I hope my furbaby wasn't born into a puppy mill, they look horrible places.

I'm the type of person that buys free range eggs, coz I don't encourage battery farms, & puppy mills seem like the same thing.

I didnt even realise that you can purchase pups from pet shops in the UK! I have never seen pets other than hamsters, bunnies and gerbils (smaller Pets) in stores!

It is sad but a lot of vets don't always know better just because they are vets. They may mean well but just not be informed. One of the benifits of finding a good breeder is the can point you to a good vet who knows your breed. I have moved a lot with my husband being in the military and it hasnt always been easy to find good vets. Also some vets enjoy a relationship that sends them future clients and will offer puppy food, discount on vaccinations and other incentives for sending new puppy parents their way. sadly there is no laws against back yard breeding. At least not in the United States. I also agree with some of the other replys that any sort of middle man is not a good idea and to me would be a warning flag.

Most reputable breeders want to meet the families that are interested in their puppies. Selling to pet stores means that once a dog leaves the store they would have no idea what kind of environment that dog would be placed in...

I would encourage you to do your homework and find a breeder that you can buy directly from. I bought from a BYB......and as a result lost my boxer to a nasty disease which came as a result of breeding unhealthy animals. Linus was the picture of health and was so darn cute for the first few months. I am paying for it now.......my heart is broken.
