I wanted to thank everyone for their posts about their back yard bred babies and the problems it can cause. I goes so much further to show others why we need to weed out and get rid of BYB rather than just some of us saying it's bad (the purists as it's called I guess =/ )and some saying no it's fine. There ARE successful stories of BYB bred dogs who don't have problems, just like there are stories of breeders who did "everything right" and still had something happen but it really does show how much our dogs can be affected by bad breeding practices and how painful it is for them, and for us, for it to continue. It's sure easy to say there is nothing wrong with it when your dog doesn't have the problems, but when it is your dog it sure opens your eyes to the seriousness and by posting your stories you are letting others see how bad the BYB business is.

Everyone who is buying a puppy or dog, who isn't going through rescue (which is a GREAT idea by the way, to rescue), please please don't support BYB or pet shops. Buy from a reputable breeder, even if it means having to wait for what you want.

Byb

i agree totally with Vela and adeinert as well. i appreciate all the informative information that you both posted and provided to the other BW members that don't know why BYB are so bad. i've never purchased a pup from a BYB and would never recommend that anyone do so. after all, if you're a true boxer lover than you will want to preserve the breed to its finest form.

I know there are already alot of posts as to what can happen with a BYB pup, but just wanted to add my 2cents I also bought Boomer from a BYB-(before I found this site and learned better)-now don't get me wrong the dogs stay in the ladys' house, are very loved, and aren't really treated like proverbial "breeding machines". Boom's mom has only had two litters, and that's going to be all from her, but they still don't do the proper health test, and, luckily, Boomer hasn't developed any serious health problems. However, he does have severe allergies, and has a MAJOR yeast problem, that is, from what I understand VERY hereditary. After I had him diagnosed, I called the "breeder" to tell her and she said "Oh, well, like mother, like son, I guess." WHAT? You knew she had these problems, but you still bred her-TWICE. She said her vet told her that the mother had "outgrown" the problem, and it was a slim chance of the puppies having the same issues. YEAH, RIGHT! The mother was beautiful when I went to look at the pups, so it does give me hope for Boomer, but it's been a long, and very expensive road, and he's only 1 1/2 years old. My vet says the chances of him "outgrowing" these issues os slim and none.

I 2 agree with vela, adeinert, and boxer

Back yard breeding hurts everyone involved (except vets). The new owners and the heart ache they will have as they deal with health problems, the decline of our great breed.

That’s why we need to keep educating people about proper breeding.
The only way we can stop this negative trend is to stop buying pups from bybers. If they couldn't make money then they would have no reason for doing it.

Byb

We learned our lesson with a pug from a pet store. She is 12 years old, has alergies to everything, Colapsing trachea, arthritis of the back, almost blind, deaf, and we just found out she is diabetic. I give her weekly injections for alergies and daily for her diabeties. We just lost worf (Our boxer) to a brain tumor who was a BYB puppy too. He had mange and hip dysplasia but we loved him immensely. he was a great friend but do to his suffuring the last couple of years of hip problems we decided to go to a breeder and follow the recomendations we have been reading here. We are going to pick up our new boxer pup in 6 weeks. and he is goergous. Its hard to watch a loved one suffering.
