Looking for pup

I am thinking about getting marq a boxer puppy for christmas. I have no idea as to what to look for or where even to start. Marq got me Oscar for xmas 2 years ago and he did such a great job picking him out that I am afraid I might screw up. I mean Oscar is such an awesome dog that I am almost tempted to let marq pick his own out. I know that Marq did a lot of research and looking when he was shopping for Oscar. Does anyone have suggestions as to where I could research this?

Thanks
Marta

For a listing of breeders that does the appropriate genetic testing.......http://www.boxerworld.com/breeders. Hopefully, one listed is in your area.

There are many breeders that do (and do not) do genetic testing. Genetic testing is VITAL for the health of our breed. If you find a breeder, please be sure to screen them and ask the appropriate questions. If they can not supply the hard-copy documentation of the genetic testing, please do not purchase from them. Any reputable breeder will be glad to furnish the documentation.

Never go to a petstore to purchase a puppy.

Another avenue to help aid you in your search........contact your local boxer club, contact your local boxer rescue, or go to a dog show in your area for a referral to a reputable/responsible breeder. All need to be screened. Remember, ASK QUESTIONS!! You will not make a reputable/responsible breeder mad by screening them, as they will also be screening you.

Good luck in your search.

Just an added note, I'd be very weary of breeders who have pups available for Christmas. Many reputable breeders, or shall I say most reputable breeders, will NOT have a litter available at Christmas time. To many people purchase cute pups for Christmas presents, but once the novelty wears off and the responsibility becomes a reality, they're dumped off at shelters.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't get a puppy for Christmas, nor am I saying that the breeder is definitely a bad breeder for having a litter of pups for sale at that time. I'm merely asking you to be very cautious and please make sure that they do all of the testing to ensure a healthy pup.

Good luck with your search!!

Choosing a Breeder

I too am looking for a puppy and have been for 2 months. I am on a puppy waiting list with a wonderful breeder. My advice is read the page suggested about breeders, look on the internet and ask the questions suggested. You won't believe some of the answers you will recieve and sometimes they won't even answer them in hopes you'll forget If your gut tells you something is wrong then go with it and back out.

If you don't find the right puppy for Christmas may I suggest you get a stuffed animal with a card that says something like " I will be replaced with the real thing as soon as the right one comes along." Then he could also help with the research and final decision.
Don't get frustrated and don't give up. Good luck and keep us posted.

Buying the stuffed animal is an awesome idea. I have been doing research for months, I can't wait to get a Fawn boxer.
