Long Night - No Sleep - Exhausted Today

Well here was my night last night - Around 8:00 I just settled down to watch some TV w/my fiancee. All of a sudden, out of the corner of my eye, I see something BIG flying around. At that same moment Danny says, "Amy, what is in the house, AMY WHAT IS IN THE HOUSE?????? There was a bat in my house and it is flying around the living room. My first instinct is to scream, "DIVA WATCH OUT!!!"
So Danny has our throw pillows in his hands and is swinging them around trying to do what I do not know. I am screaming at the top of my lungs and running out of the house with Diva.
We make it outside and Danny is inside trying to do something with this bat.
About 30 minutes later I bring Diva in the hallway and open up the door to find out what Danny was doing. He had cornered this thing in our living room and was shining a flash light on it so it did not move.
I grabbed the cell phone and phone book and back outside I am to call someone.
First I called the police to see if they could give me some numbers of anyone that I could call to get this thing out of my house. They did, and of course, when I called they said, we can not help but try this person, so on and so forth.
So, I was looking in the yellow pages under Pest Control calling everyone that I saw with 24 hour emergency service.
I left messages for about 20 people. Now, about an hour or so goes by and someone decides to call me back. He said that he can help me, so I give him directions to the house and he is on his way.
Well, about an hour later he shows up. Now it is around 10:30 when he gets there. Diva is beside herself because she does not know what the heck is going on, never mind the fact that we are all usually in bed by 9.
This guy gets the bat and leaves all in a matter of 5 minutes and charges me $150.00!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the time we got settled down from that it is now 11:30 and we all go to bed. Of course, I can not sleep because all I can think of is that I am going to be attacked by another bat in my sleep!!!
Alarm goes off at 5:30 this morning and I did not want to move!!!!

Crazy night!!! Anyone ever have a bat in their house???

What a story and what a night!
When I lived in Abdijan, Ivory Coast, there were thousands of bats flying in the city. The first days I thought they were pigeons. LOL I was very surprised to see they were bats instead. That said, they were cute and their name there was roussette. They have big eyes and eat fruits like bananas/mangos.

Oh man!! I can totally relate to this one. Last year we did some major remodeling to our house and somehow a bat must have got in and then didn't make it out by the time the roof and walls were put back up. Anyway, my hubby works nights, so it's just the kids and I. We are all sitting in the living room and all of a sudden I see it swoop in front of the tv. I am instantly paralyzed with fear, I honestly couldn't even move. I HATE BATS! Kids are totally freaking out and yes, we are all crying. Then it flies back out and down in the basement it went. The kids and I grabbed the phone and locked ourselves in my bedroom. Called my husband, who is a truck driver and is like 3 hours away from home. Sometimes I hate his job, but anyway, he called one of our neighbors and he came down and went in the basement to find it. Our basement is huge with lots of good hiding places for a little bat. He did not end up finding it. Next day hubby went down searching, again didn't find it. So of course he teases me that it was all in my head. And found it rather amusing that I slept with a tennis racket under my bed. Alright, lets move forward like a month, haven't seen or heard the little s.o.b....thinking it must be gone right. WRONG!! Again, it's me and the kids, it Friday night and were all laying in my bed watching some tv. The damn thing swoops out from behind my mirror on my dresser. So I steel myself, tell the kids to get under the blankets and grab my tennis racket. I have never been so scared in my entire life!! But after about 7 swings and endless words I should have NOT used in front of my children I finally whacked him. Now...this is the part that proves you do not think intelligently will you are scared out of your wits. In our bedroom we have french doors that I could have opened and let the little sucker out where he wanted to be with no swinging involved at all. DUH. I made sure to call my hubby and tell him that "I" got my imaginary bat! Wow, sorry this was so long!

After countless calls to all the 24 hour emergency numbers the first person that called me back was from "Critters and Creatures".
He did say though, that included in the $150.00 that I handed over last night was a full home inspection to see how it could have possibly gotten in. I am just soooooo scared that there may be more!!!

We had one once too. It was swooping down and scaring me ,my kids and the dog. Luckily DH was home and was able to trap it and get it out using a pool net and cardboard. A few nights later the stupid thing came back! This time to get it out he had to kill it. i felt bad but there's been no problem since. I think it was getting in through the fireplace flue. Someone told us they only need a space the size of a dime to get in.
I don't mind bats outside, I know they kill alot of bugs, etc. but stay out of the house!

The one I had in my house didnt come in from the attic it actually flew right in through the door when my hubby was coming in from outside..My dad came and caught it within minutes, and said he was having it tested for rabies because it is rare to see a bat flying around during the day like that. Sure enough the results came back positive. If you have any more problems with it let me know and Ill ask my dad..Good luck and hopefully it was a freak thing =)
Thanks for all of the information. We are having this one tested - just in case!! I am a freak when it comes to things like this!!
I will be going home tonight and sanitizing my whole house!!!
I threw my throw pillows out that my fiancee was throwing around the living room just in case the bat may have brushed them. You never know. So I will be at Target at lunch today looking for more pillows!!!

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad night, but your story was SO funny. I would have had to spend the night at a hotel ( after a shot of vodka, that is ) I had a bat hanging outside in front of my front door. I called animal control and they rescued me! I hope the critter control people can come to your house today and find out how that little sucker got in. Please let us know!

There were a lot of bats where my parent lived. We never had a problem with them. My cat actually caught on one once and ran downstairs with it. I went after him, thinking it was a bird. I open the door into the room downstairs and squashed it. Oops, I dead bat, so I had to dispose of it. I didn't even think of rabies until after the fact othewise I would have been more careful how I handled it.

HAHAHAHAHAHA *cries with laughter*

i'm so sorry to laugh at your pain, but honestly - "attack of the tiny cute fluffy things!!!!!"

*whew* sorry about that! i know i'm being impossibly rude , but i love bats - at my cottage, we often go sit outside in the evening to watch them swoop overhead. they're very beautiful, and plus they get rid of bugs and everything! i like bats, and i've always wished i could have one as a pet. they're like hamsters with wings on!

i guess i'm the odd one out though, i usually am ! i also love spiders, rats, mice, bee's (and hornets), snakes.....on the whole, i love and respect all animals, and i certainly wouldn't dream of trying to hit one with a tennis racket. seems a little cruel to me .

ah well, to each his own !

Thanks for the laugh- although I'd have been freaked out if it was me in your shoes. I have yet to see a bat in person (other than at the zoo) I wonder if they just dont like the Midwest region for some reason?? Hopefully they'll find out where he came from and board that hole up really tight!! When we had our house remodeled an owl got trapped inside and he'd just sit there in the new add-on room and look at us through the windows (wall was still separating the new from old part at the time). He was cute guy, stayed around for a while, we now have a picture of him hangin on the wall by where he use to sit. Maybe you should have taken a pic. of your new bat-friend and hung it there to remember him by--HA HA.
