How much would you spend on vet bills?
Local radio talk show here in Detroit has a dou who think people spending money for vet bills are lunatics.
Yes they called me a lunatic when I said I would spend whatever it takes to save my fur babies. I had an "opprtunity" recently to do that - over $2000 for Curly and the mast cell removal (with followup visits)
and well over $20,000 to save my horse Guntown. Yes its all financed - no way do we have the $$$ - but they are my responsibility.
I didnt really need a new car and car payments
I just feel we "adopt" out pets and are obligated to help to the best of our ability. Thank God hubby does too.
So how many "lunatics" are out there??????

I would do anything too...Disney needed emergency surgery 3 years ago I didn't care how much it cost, and the vet actually said: He is one lucky dog to have you, many wouldn't do the surgery. We don't have skin kids and won't so these are our kids and anything they need they will get!!!

I would do as much as I can for them. Like a previous poster said, I don't have skin kids, so my furbabies (& fishbabies) are children to me. That being said, who wouldn't do anything for their kids?

Well, certified lunatic here. Id have to get my reciepts to tell exactly how much Ive spent, but its got to be getting up to the 1k mark and Shotzes only 5 months. Id spend more if I had to and not think twice about it. I think people who do NOT spend money on vets are lunatics and dont love thier dogs!

Plenty of people, but they aren't likely to be the same people who are spending hours talking about their dogs on an internet forum.
My husband and his family are good examples, though. They think of themselves as "dog" people, and dogs live in the house, cuddle, play, etc. Overall the dogs get attention, love, and basic healthcare...but at the same time, they do not think of dogs as "part of the family" the way most of us here at BW do. For them, I'm quite sure there is a limit on how much money they would spend. I'm not sure what it is. Hundreds of dollars is probably ok, but if you start talking thousands, I'd be surprised if they would pay it. There is really wide range of pet attitudes - most of us on BW fall at the extreme end of doing as much for our pets as we would any human member of the family...and of course the opposite extreme are the people who would do nothing and neglect their pets routinely. But probably the majority are in the middle.
I had several thousand dollars of vet expenses the first 6 weeks that I had my dog, so I'm well aware that they can get high unexpectedly. I know that my husband will have issues if I have to spend that kind of money again, but I also know I'll win! We knew going into the marriage that we had different philosophies about pets, but he also recognizes that's an integral part of who I am...asking me not to put a high priority on my pets would be like me asking him not to be social! It can't happen - it's part of who we are, and we have to accept that.

We would spend as much as needed as long as the prognosis is good. We have already spent more on Buster than any other dog I've ever had.. Its close to $5000.00 but we've also spent that much money on computers, cars and toys for us. So here's another family of lunatics...

Count me in! Last year, I spent over $2,500 on Pepper's illness, and ended up with no dog to show for it because I had to help her to the bridge. And, I'd do it all over again!!!!!

I'm right there with all of you lunatics! I'd mortgage my house if I had to. Only the best for my baby.

I think the majority of BW members would say the same...we would do anything for our pets. They are our kids.
