dogs.
Melanie, you will have to take the Bulldog off the German Dog list, it is English. It used to be spelt: Bulddogge. The modern spelling came into use after the 17th. century. Also the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, (the dog everyone calls the Pit Bull), started off in England. That owes much to the Bulldog. In the United States there is an American Staffordshire Terrier, which is heavier, more powerful and more aggressive. The Mastiff is also English. Sorry to make your list smaller. You can add to your list the German Pomeranian, (Spitz), the German Shorthaired Pointer, Great Dane, and the Leonberger. I got the information from the World Encyclopedia of Dogs. Helene.

Leonberger.
Melanie, the Leonberger is a large dog weighing around 110-132lbs.The coat is fairly long and it has an abundant mane around the neck and chest. The colour is various shades of brown and black with a black mask. It seems as if the original mates were the Newfoundland of the Landseer variety (with a lot of white), the large Pyrenean Mountain Dog (which in early days had large fawn markings) and, in particular, the St.Bernard (which at that time did not have its present huge and rather round head). I will try to take a scan of the photo in my book. It is not recognized by KC (GB) and AKC. I have heard of the French Bulldog, it looks very much like a Pug, but not an American. Helene.

Bulldogs
Helene, The american bulldog, RESEMBELS the boxer, The American Bulldog has a tail, and the ears are natual. Sometimes boxers are mistaken for American Bulldogs, if i find a picture of one i will email it to you.
The Great Mastiff is also called the Bordeux (not sure of the spelling. Sorry Olly, Yes there are 3 types of "Bulldogs" English, which is the short stockier, slobberier one, the American, which resembles a Boxer, (Chance from Homeward Bound i believe was a bulldog) and the French, which has the Bat ears.

I do not know about the Great Mastiff but in France the dogue de Bordeaux is not a Mastiff. Hooch (from the movie Turner & Hooch) is a dogue de Bordeaux

Dogs.
Melanie, I have just sent you two scans from my book one on the Leonberger and one on the Mastiff. I hope they are clear enough to read. I don't know how to put them onto this page or I would have done that. I looked for the Bordeaux in my book and they don't have it!!! Helene.
