Cow/Pig Hooves

________________________________________
I usually don't post about this kind of thing, but felt compelled to tell this sad story:

I take Leah to the vet for doggy day care twice a week and of course know everyone and have the run of the place and sometimes help out if needed.

On Monday a beautiful Vizsla dog, Emma, was brought in flat out cold and basically dying. The vets rushed her back and started fluids, blood work and whatever else they could think of including looking for blockage. No blockage. Talk to the owners and run through what she eats, treats, activities..all the standard things. For chewing and treats they give her cow and/or pig hooves....

Well, later today she will be put to sleep because she has such a massive intestinal bacterial infection and now kidneys that are failing and in her poop is sharp pieces of hoof...that is when she still was pooping. That has since stopped along with peeing and eating. When I got there today she is a skeleton and all puffed up in her face and legs. I sat down with her and petted her and talked to her for a little while. Leah was standing there....I wonder if she knows she is sick?

I know alot of the "seasoned" members of BW are aware of these kind of treats. I posted this basically to add to the stories of these dangerous treats for new members. My vet has seen this before, but sometimes people still continue to give these treats to the dogs. My vet's wife is a "earthy, holistic" person and she always tells new clients with puppies to steer clear of raw hides, hooves and discusses raw meaty bones and using kongs and yet she says: owners do what they feel is right or convenient and when this kind of thing happens then they pay attention.

It's such a sad time for the owners and I'm sure they will feel guilty for a long time because of this. My hope is they will pass along and teach others not to give these kinds of treats.

Sorry so long...it's just a sad story/situation. Emma is only a year and a half.

That poor pup! I have always stayed clear of those and my SIL told me she was buying them for her dog. I told her they made me nervous and I told her to check with her vet. Thankfully, I never saw my "niece" with another one. Saying a prayer for Emma.

Thanks Pam. It is sad. Like the saying goes: When you know better, you do better.

Unless a miracle happens for Emma, she'll be gone and all over a nasty hoof.

Like I said, I wanted to tell the story so any new members can learn that bad things can happen when treats like this are given.

Yes very sad indeed. I would never dream of giving anything like that to mine because apart from be bad for them it would gross me out to look at them eating it . I.ll keep my fingers crossed for the poor girl but I doubt she will come back from this.
