Help with brand of vacuum cleaner

My very very old very wonderful Hoover upright keeps breaking belts. Although I love this vacuum dearly, I think it's time for a new one. I'd like to purchase an upright, with onboard hand tools (I don't have that now), preferably lightweight, and under $200. Does anyone have any suggestions for a brand? One that's reliable for dog hair? Thanks in advance!

Well, we have a Hoover bagless that I think is great, and our roommate who recently moved out had a Hoover w/ bags that was incredible (oh how I will miss that vacuum ). The Hoovers are not "lightweight" machines but I LOVE the hand tool that is like a mini-vacuum (both Hoovers had this), it is GREAT for pet hair, stairs and upholstery.

My mom got the Bissel Pet Hair Eraser this year, and I'm not a fan to say the least IMO the suction is weak compared to the Hoovers I've used, the rubber-clad "pet-hair-erasing" hand tools are a joke, and the dirt compartment is a PAIN to empty -- you end up having to vacuum all around the vacuum afterwards because it makes such a mess. Before the Pet Hair Eraser I have used 2 other Bissels which I also was not impressed with, so I'm not big on that brand. Just my opinion

Definitely not under $200, but I love our Dyson. It was well worth what we spent on it.

After I took my carpet cleaner in last year for repairs I asked the repair man what he thought the best vacuum would be when it came time to replace my old one, and he said hands down a Hoover. They have the best suction and are well made. I haven't had to replace mine yet so I can't say from experience as my old Dirt Devil is still kicking. I can say my Dirt Devil is better then the Bissel that I had before it.

YES! The Dyson Animal (the purple one) is worth every penny. The upholstery attachment is AMAZING for dog hair (if you allow your dog onto the couch/ furniture). I cannot say enough good things about this vac. It’s more than 200.00 but maybe you could find a used one or one at a close out sale for cheaper. Ours is 4yrs old and still good as new and I use it at least every other day (or more)!

I agree with the Dyson...not under $200 for new but worth it. We have had ours for almost 9 years and we just had to replace one part and it was only $8.00. Now it's like a new vacuum all over again.

I actaully saw quite a few on Ebay and Amazon right around $200 or $230...they were refurbished but in my opinion would be great. The suction you get the Dyson is truly amazing..it makes old carpet look new. Not too mention the amount of dirt and dog hair that the others leave behind.

Good luck!

Thanks for everyone's responses. Sounds like a Dyson commercial.....lol! I think I'll have to make the investment. I love a clean house and I don't want to have to purchase another vacuum for a long time. I see there are two different ones for animal DC25 and DC28. Any preference from you owner's? Actually a store nearby has them on sale w/ free shipping. Should make the purchase closer to $400. Thanks again for your time!

I've been wanting a dyson for a while but I haven't been able to convince my husband that the price tag would be worth it. I can't stand the vaccuum that I have now. It's sooo old and it doesn't pick up hardly anything on hard floors so I end up going around on my hands and knees with the attachment getting as much as I can. Rugs are so-so but definitely far from good. And now with having a dog for the last year i've felt like I need a new one more than ever. After reading all the great things you all have been saying about it I want it more than I did before...
