Vet prescriptions filled at a pharmacy?

Right now Bayleigh is on a low dose of prednisone. The cost is not too bad but we have talked about different meds and the cost is a lot higher. Can the vet write a prescription and then you can take it to a regular pharmacy to be filled? I realize it would have to be human drugs. Has anyone done this?

Never mind...I just answered my own question! I called CVS and asked and they do fill prescriptions from a vet, as long as they are human grade meds.

Now I wonder if the vet would write a prescription since they probably profit from filling their own meds.

When Austin had to take the Accutane his oncologist called it into a pharmacy in Arizona because it was a lot cheaper and they mailed it to me. Actually it came addressed to Austin, and even had a Milk Bone in there! (gave him terrible gas!)

My boxer Stoli is on thyroid medication and we get that at the pharmacy in Giant Eagle. Alot less expensive than the vet's office.

I got my human prescription filled at the Vet's once!! I had a sinus infection or something that required antibiotics. My boss took one look at the prescription and filled it for me at his cost. He said it was the same drug, it just wasn't coated. (they were pretty gross going down!! ) I remember a couple of times an animal client was referred to the regular pharmacy because we didn't carry a certain drug.

I've been meaning to check into that so thanks for the reminder! I'll be saving $6 every month on Bailey's Phenobarbital by having it filled at my regular pharmacy. Woohoo!!!

You may also want to check some of the mail order pharmacies. When my cat had to take metronidazole and ronidazole we had to order it from Pet Health Pharmacy so it could be compounded into a liquid with flavor because I couldn't get a pill into her without her biting through my finger...ouch!

Pet Health Pharmacy was very nice and cheap but may not be worth it if you were getting just a regular pill.

My Jack Russell is on phenobarbital and my vet actually quit filling the prescription and changed it to a local pharmacy. I was concerned about the cost but turns out it is actually cheaper. One day I went to pick it up and there was a young girl working the counter. I gave her the name (it's actually in Reggie's name with my last name) and when she went to get it she saw that it said K-9 on the label. She actually asked me if he really took them? I so wanted to answer her "no, I just fill it for fun!"

We have gotten lots of our dog’s prescriptions filled at the people pharmacy. You’d be surprised how many drugs are interchangeable between humans & k9s. We currently fill Trucker’s Prozac at Costco. The funniest thing was when they asked me if Trucker preferred child safe lids or regular lids…umm let me ask him & I’ll get back to you! Lol!

We've been really lucky, our vet fills prescription at cost, they have been really good, I am so glad we found them.
