Question about breeding/stud fee?

I used my male as a stud a couple months ago. The female had 7 pups a week ago. Sadly, due to an infection that the mother developed, 4 of the pups died, and the remaining 3 are not looking good. Is it wrong to still expect my stud fee? I'm torn. Help!

This is the sort of thing that needs to be worked out in the stud contract signed at the time of the breeding.

Usually they indicate "live pups" which it sounds like she had. Still, it might be a kindness (if the other pups don't make it) to waive the stud fee.

And I would check your boy. There are sexually transmitted diseases that cause sterility in males and kill off litters of pups in utero or shortly after birth. If she already had something she might have transmitted it to your boy; likewise, if he has been used at stud he may have given it to HER.

I assume you had at least a brucellosis done, but at any rate I would ask the bitch owner to identify the cause of the infection so that you can check your boy. If they don't know, they can find out by doing necropsies on the dead puppies (which is what should be done when the first and second die, so as to save the others if the problem is treatable). If they already know what it is, you're ahead.

Is this Tyson your 21 month old? Has he had the proper health testing done (which BTW is done at 2 years of age). If he hasn't then you should not be studding him let alone expecting a fee.

Well I was told the mother developed a breast infection, which then got into the milk that the pups were drinking. So I don't think its any kind of STD....but I will definitely find out more specifics and hope that nothing was transmitted to Tyson. Also, this was the first time Tyson was a stud, so he definitely didn't transmit anything.

So I am assuming you never did a Brucellosis test? Either on Tyson or the mother? It does not matter they were virgins. And this sounds exacty like what can happen with an infected litter. As well, if she is infected then Tyson is also infected now.
Just to be absolutely clear on what Christina is saying - while Brucellosis is most commonly a sexually-transmitted disease, it can be transmitted through feces or any bodily fluid - urine, saliva, etc. It is entirely possible for a maiden dog or bitch to be infected with Brucellosis, if they've had contact with the feces or fluid of an infected dog. This is why testing is vital even before a first breeding.
