Question Adopting a white boxer

Our C. G is a 2yr old fawn neutered male. He is feisty. He has played with other neutered females well. We have a chance to save a one year old white neutered male who is deaf. The white one will have to be turned over to the animal shelter if he is not adopted.

Any suggestions as to the desirability of this adoption and how to introduce the new dog to C. G. if we go ahead, would be most helpful.

Cheers,
Gwailo

My primary concern is having two males in one household. This is often problematic. But since both males will be neutered, and they are not littermates and one is at least a year younger, that helps the situation. And, since the white boxer is deaf I believe that can make a big difference since the "pecking order" will be established from the outset. The deaf dog will necessarily need the hearing dog to get along and learn. He will follow the hearing dog's lead, so to speak.

There are a few owners here with deaf boxers and those with multi-dog households as well, including their deaf dogs. I'm sure you will get some responses soon (weekends are slow here).

As for introducing two dogs, here are a couple of links that will be helpful.

Additionally, please use the search button here on each page (top) and use search terms such as "deaf" and "hearing" etc. and you'll find a host of information from those who have more exerience than I with raising a deaf boxer.

My congratulations to you. I hope you can help this poor dog. The rewards will be incredible, I'm sure.

Anything worth accomplishing takes work. If you want it badly enough, you'll find a way to make it work.

Best of luck.

Here's another link or two for you to check out:

http://www.deafdogs.org
http://www.handspeak.com/

I think these are both great sites on how to live and work with a deaf dog. The second site offers you "training" on signing (as in sign language) different words "critical" to a dog's vocabulary. Best of luck!

I have a white female deaf boxer named Maddie. She and my older male boxer Chance get along great. There were a few times in the begining that they got into it (mainly because of jealousy), but we have had no problems at all since. They absolutly love and adore each other to death. Maddie "reads" Chance and his actions and has picked up on alot of his ways. She knows sign language and does really good with it. We bought a vibrating collar for her, we are still in the process of training her with it. It has been alot easier with her than I ever expected, I would do it again in a heartbeat. You would never guess that she is deaf, alot of people ask us if we know for sure if she is but believe me she is!! As far as having 2 males in the same household, I can't really help on that one but for a short time when I was still living at home with my parents they got a male boxer and he and Chance lived together, we never had any problems except a few times (just like with my female) they get along great and are best friends and see each other almost every weekend. It's a plus that they are both neutered, that will help out alot! You will just have to introduce them slowly like you would with any new animal you bring into the home. Two boxers are great, they keep each other busy and play themselfs to sleep. Good luck if you decide to get him, let us know what you do!!!!

My husband and I adopted a deaf white boxer from rescue about 4 years ago. At the time, we had two hearing boxers (both have since passed to the Bridge). The only real issues we had with the deaf dog was teaching him a 'calm down' signal when he was too active and housebreaking.

Deaf dogs are wonderful companions - my Gus is just now four years old and has competed for and earned four titles! They can learn as easily as a hearing dog.

Also, just because the dog is deaf, don't be fooled that it can't be the leader of the pack - since our two hearing boxers passed, we adopted a border collie puppy, and Gus is definitely his boss!
