Smile Boxer mixes

I just had my rescue pup tested and turns out he is 85% boxer, 15% St. Bernard! He has a longer snout and I have wondered if he were mixed or if the backyard breeding didnt' go so well.

He is the sweetest boy and I was just wondering if anyone else has or has known a boxer/bernard mix before?

Check out my gallery - do you see bernard in him at all?

He acts like a boxer except he seems like a lazy boxer compared to what I read on the site. HE does get excited and kidney beans/woo woos/jumps like crazy but he also LOVES LOVES LOVES to sit right behind mama on the couch or lay in bed with me. He sure is a sweetie.

Just curious - I had a hard time finding any images on google of a boxer st. bernard that was brindle like my boy.

Suggestions?

Do you think this mix will still be okay with kids?

How interesting! Never known, seen or even HEARD of a Boxer/St. Bernard mix myself. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever even seen a purebred St. Bernard in person either Not really a popular breed around here I guess.

And no, I do not see any St. Bernard in your guy from his photos! 15% is not much though... I would expect any dog that was mixed 85/15 to look more like the 85 part. Also possible that the test results were incorrect That wouldn't be unheard of....

What kind of suggestions are you looking for?? I guess I'm not TOO surprised that you were actually able to find pictures of Boxer/St. Bernard mixes... you can find just about anything on the internet after all but I wouldn't think anything about not finding a brindle one! Once again, if the test results are correct, your pup is only 15% St. Bernard still mostly boxer.

I'm sure. I can't say for sure how your puppy in particular will be with kids, but I highly doubt that the itty bit of St. Bernard in him would make him "less good" with kids than a boxer. St. Bernards are known to be very kid-friendly.

Thumbs up

I grew up with St. Bernards (newborn to tween) and have had boxers as well. Our last St. (Cindy-Bear) was around three kids under the age of 6; never had any problems. Cindy-Bear was very protective of my mother; especially when she was pregnant with my sister. She was a gentle giant, very patient & loving dog.
Personally, I would not have a problem with a boxer/St. Bernard mix.
Your dog is beautiful! It is nice to read you rescued him as well.
Good luck,
Mary, Sally & Sam

He looks exactly like my Lulu. I knew she wasn't full boxer,,her mom is a boxer and was at the pound pregnant with 8 pups when the rescue got her. Lulu looked a lot more like a boxer when she was younger in the nose. I'd like to ger her tested to see what else she is,but I understand that is a little expensive isn't it?

It's only $100 in my area, but personally I feel it's $100 I could be spending on something else, when I go by the personality of the pet rather than the breeds. But in my area it runs around $100 for the test.

price of testing

yea it was like $135 for my guy to be tested through the vet.

I'm a little OCD about things that I know I can have - so because I KNEW there was a way to find out exactly what he was I did it.

He still acts 90% boxer and has all of the traits including:
-woo woo bark/song
-kidneybeaning/wiggle butt
-jumping maniac
-VERY smart

but he is not as "high energy" as I read a boxer is supposed to be. He is very calm and well behaved for a 5 month old puppy and we got super lucky!

It was just bothering me to find out what he was and I feel bad I made him go through it but now we have an idea of how big he will get (likely 80-100 instead of 50-80) due to his st. bernard mix. It will help us prepare for his size, traits, and health problems now that we know what he is.

Not necessarily. I've seen Boxer Great Dane mixes that were only 40 pounds, and beagle and lab mixes that were 70 pounds. Given that it's a MIX they can take on the trait of one or the other or have a mixture of both, so it's really still just a guessing game on size, personality, and everything else.

And I have 2 Boxers, have had 3 total, all 100% full bred Boxers, none of the 3 were hyper. I've fostered for a few also and have only had one or two that were more on the hyper side. Many times it just depends on the dog, the atmosphere of the home and the family (we are not hyper people in my household), more so than the breed alone.

Unfortunately regardless of knowing what they are or not, it's really still just a guessing game until they're around 2 years old and you know they're done growing, personalities are formed, etc. I wouldn't read too much into it, and would go based on him as an invidual versus him as a Saint Bernard, or Boxer, or both.

I have a boxer/st bernard mix. I have some pics in my gallery, but they are all old. I will try to upload more today. She is fawn, not brindle and she is more likely 50/50 mix though I dont really know.

She is actually more hyper/athletic than my full boxer during play time, but more more chill around the house. She doesnt have the boxer traits like beaning and woo woo'ing.

I have seen brindle boxer/st mixes on petfinder.com. If you search St. bernard, then you can find ones that are mixed with boxer. I think (though not sure) that there is a bridle coat pattern on st bernards too.

Violet used to LOVE kids. She was so gentle and patient with them. But she had an incident at the vet where a 10 y/o boy stomped on her tail while I looked away for 2 minutes to pay my bill. Since then she does not like little kids and I am too nervous to try to reintroduce her... shes too big for a mistake to happen.

Your boy is so cute. Enjoy the kisses and SLOBBER!!!

It's soo awesome to talk with someone who also has a boxer/st. bernie mix! I'll keep checking your gallery for pics of Violet! Rocky can get pretty wild when we are playing, but agreed- around the house he'd rather lay on the couch with me or on his dog bed then do too much else. His playing sessions of fetch or what not last about 30 minutes, then he's out for 2 hours. Probably part of just being a puppy too! He is the sweetest dog I've ever met (the only one I've owned) but I've been around a ton of other dogs growing up. He also is ridiculously smart - super easy to train so far. I know he's only 5 months and we have a ways to go but so far so good. I feel like it's too easy - i'm sure his terrible teens will hit soon and I'll be smacking myself on the head for talking about how "easy" it's been!

Thanks for your post! Again - awesome to see another boxer/st. bernie on here!

Not necessarily....my Cody has been good and easy from day one. He was of course a boxer puppy so we did have our moments..but all in all he has been so easy. Aniah is the devils own and has been naughty and hard from day one . Hope Rocky does what Cody did and stays a good and easy boy....good luck.
