Frustrated, sad and concerned
Hi, we have two gorgeous fawn boxers female. Reyna is 12 yrs old and the Baby Bella is 3 and a bundle of energy. Yesterday i awoke to my 12 yrs old having what i thought was Petit mal Seizures. I found a video on a vets site on the web and it was exactly what she was exepriencing visibily. I quickly got her to the Vet. I reside in Panama latin America. The Vet ran all blood tests and all came back normal. She felt Phenobarbital would assist in the seizures. We commenced the first 1/2 tablet yesterday. Nothing hasd changed and in fact she is worse. She is normally a very well behaved dog but she is not responding to instructions not because she is being bad but because it seems she doesnt recognise the commands. She is still having the twitching with the eyes, front legs, muth, head and she cannot stand for very long without tipping over or collapsing. I am heart broken and i just wish i was back in Australia with my vet. Has anyone had similiar conditions with their dog that i could discuss with the vet here ??? i feel itis cns or pns issues witht he central nervious system. Any advice would be welcome - i will be taking my darling back to the vet monday - i will try 3 days of the drugs to see if it gets better.

I'm sorry I have no advice for you. I hope the meds start to work soon. How very fortunate you are to have a 12 year old!! My girl is Avery and she is 11 and I think as a senior she is more fun now than ever!

I have no input either, but send lots of healing and hopeful vibes for your beloved Reyna. I hope the medicine will work and the seizures will stop. You might do a search on seizures in the Health issues forum, and the internet to get more information. Please keep us posted.

It could be something like an inner ear infection or sadly a brain tumor. You may want to ask the moderators to move this to the health section. I think you'll get more answers there. I hope you get answers soon. In the meantime just try to keep her comfortable.

No grain
Some dogs have seizures because they can't digest grain. Try switching to a food with potato as your source of carbohydrates.
Good luck.

Try to rule out food allergies, any other medications (some antibiotics can cause seizures), any bug bites or spider bites (there are some nasty ones in south america), any parasites.
I hope it's as simple as the above, they can be monitored.
We always think of the worst and hope for the best.
I am hoping your old baby can make it thru this. I am sending positive vibes your way. Hang in there.

Maybe the dosage of pheno is not correct. My JRT takes pheno because he has seizures but there can sometimes be dosage adjustments in the beginning. It also does not eliminate the seizures completely. He goes in spurts and may have one daily for a few days and then go for months without. He also has to have his blood tested once a year to make sure that he stays in a range that is not adversely affecting his liver. My vet was never able to determine conclusively what causes Reggie's seizures so he is classified as having idiopathic epilepsy.

I'm sorry to hear of this. I have no advice other than the above to rule out "common issues" such as food allergies, bug bites/ parasites/ or ear infections first. These were the cause of my Chief's head tremors and was an easy fix. However, at the same time, I wouldn't rule out getting more tests done as soon as possible because if it's a more serious condition, you don't want to put it off. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Reyna! Please keep us posted!

I think there's a difference between head tremors and full blown seizures.
