Almost 6 months old puppy, 3 year old granddaughter

Hello All its me and Axel again,

I have read through these threads and am absorbing as much information as I can. I have never been owned by a boxer before. Axel is great but lately he has been testing us. He starts obedience class in two weeks. Axel is new to us and we have only had him for a week now. He will be 6 months old on 10/11/09.

My granddaughter comes to visit and stay a few days from time to time. She will be 3 years old on 10/30/09. She arrived last night. Axel just looooves her. He loves her so much that he growls and barks to get her to play with him. I never heard him bark before. He nips at her a little bit but does not bite her. Last night he knocked her backwards and then was all over her trying to eat her hair, nipping at her, playful growls. We told her to yip or squeel and turn away from him if he nips too hard. I think he is learning but it is tough. We have her make him sit and feed him treats and he does well with that. Tonight she will be feeding him his dinner. Which he sits for first so having her do it I think will be a good thing. We also make him sit, down and lay on his side when he trys to get her to play and doesn't want to stop. Which he does do but only stays on side for maybe 20-30 secs.

I know it is all new to him in our house and how we do things. Supposedly he was raised with 4 children from ages 4 up to 17. So various ages he has been around.

My question is, are we doing this right? Is it okay to let him play with her a little bit? We usually end up separating them after a few mintues because he is just too excited.
