Red face Ummmmm.... Riley tried to....

Tonight I brought Riley over to my aunts house again so he could play with her dog Nala. If you don't already know, Nala is a cocker spaniel/golden retriever mix. Well, Nala is now 8 months old and has gone into heat once. The vets told my aunt that she can't get spayed until August because it would have to be done between her first time in heat and her second time.

Today Riley and Nala had a blast again. The only problem was that Riley was trying to "get it on" with Nala. Ok now on with my question... How old are boxers before they can actually "succeed" in breeding?? Nala will be fixed in August, by then Riley will be 5 months old. I'm not interested in breeding Riley and I would love to keep his playdates with Nala as they really do enjoy playing with each other. I'm just afraid that he will be able to get the job done. Oh, and I should say that they aren't allowed to play unsupervised AT ALL. So I would see it going on and I would be able to seperate them. I'm just worried that I somehow wouldn't be able to split them up in time.

Actually once it's going on you would not be able to seperate them. If she is in heat, keep them seperated. A playdate isn't worth an accidental breeding. I'm not sure how old they are before they are able to perform the task but I know someone here will be able to help you with that!

Thanks Aimee!!

When I said that I'd be able to seperate them, I meant before they were going, when the "real sniffing" was beginning. I would like to think we could break them up before it all really got going.

Nala just came out of heat about two weeks ago and according to the vets, it'll be another few months before it happens again. If she does happen to go into heat sooner though, Riley will have to stay at home. I just figured that seeing as he's only 9 weeks, he'd be way to young to get the job done. It was very humorous watching him try though. Although, we did take him away from every attempt that was made.

Thanks again, I'll keep checking this post to try to find out more info!!!
