Nail Clipping? Why bother...

My boxers keep their own nails short. They dig sometimes, though I think they're getting out of that habit. They run around in our back yard like maniacs. We have a pool, so all the area around it is concrete, which I think shaves their nails down. Does anyone else notice this with their boxers, never having a need to clip their nails?

I've only had to clip Zeus' nails once so far he keeps them pretty short with all his activity. The male doxie I use to have would start to chew his nails when he thought they were to long, so I always knew when it was time to clip.

We've never clipped Billy's claws and he's 4.5 years old.

I think because we do quite a bit of pavement walking, that keeps them nice and in trim.

At his last healthcheck (5 mths ago) I asked the vet and he said they were fine.

I had Scooter's nails clipped once when he was a puppy because he was scratching me! Well after they were clipped they felt sharper, so now we just walk to the pavement and they are fine and they never get too long!

The only ones I have had to clip where Joe's front nails. His back ones stay worn down on their own. I do not have to do this very often!

Monty's two and a bit now and I too have never needed to clip his nails.
He walks a few miles each day on pavements as well as having off lead runs in the fields. I'm sure it keeps them trim. I do check them regually but they never seem to alter. They always feel blunt and never seem to grow any longer.

I think it entirely depends on the dog. My vet said he didn't cut his golden's nails until he was several years old.

I only clipped Shannon's once or twice, and they were not long.

I've clipped Bailey's a couple of times, but mostly to get her used to the process, so it's not a problem when she's older. Her nails are very short and don't seem to grow much.

Remy's nails are horribly long! And he walks on pavement and is outside a lot. It does not help.

Sometimes when my mom watches my boxer for me she will file her nails. My mom has a min. schnowzer (sp) and she files his nails instead of cutting them. She uses a very soft file so it dosn't hurt the dogs. She first started doing this to Roxy when my daughter asked her grammy (my mom) to paint Roxy's nails to. Roxy just lays there like she's getting her tummy rubbed.

Boomer was a good boy when the vet clipped his nails earlier this month. He kept tilting his head at the vet, trying to figure out what he was doing.

Cheers,
