Kaybie's Life Flashed Before My Eyes (long)
Never have I been this scared before. I was coming back from taking Kaybie for a walk and was on my street about a block away from home......and I look up and there is a girl (maybe 12 or 13 years old) trying to catch her loose pitbull running in their yard about 4 houses up. I felt myself start to panic and went to cross the street so I could go a different direction before the dog saw me and Kaybie......too late. We are in the middle of the street when I look back to the dog and it makes direct eye contact with Kaybie and I.......crouches down in to attack/prey drive mode and runs as fast as it can directly at me and Kaybie. By this time, I'm SCREAMING at this girl to "GET YOUR ****ING DOG".......she just stands there. Never calls the dog, never takes a step, never goes to get an adult. She's NOT frozen in fear but instead has a look of "I don't care" on her face. I look around and from all my screaming, the sidewalks are now lined in people watching me stand in the middle of the road screaming as this pitbull comes running toward me....no one does anything. Then the pitbull makes it to me and Kaybie in the road and I lift Kaybie by her leash/collar off the ground above my wasteline.........I know this was stupid now but it was reaction to get her away from this dog. The pitbull has it's hackles up all the way down it's back and is still in a crouched aggressive body stance. I was screaming and panicking and no one came to help. I kicked the pitbull as hard as I could in the ribcage and it didn't even seem to notice. All the while, I'm strangling Kaybie hanging her by her neck trying to keep her away from this dog. The pitbull is now circling me and Kaybie and I go to kick at it again and something catches it's eye back across the street and it runs back across the street. When it's back was to me, I saw my chance to escape and I put Kaybie back down and we ran faster than we've ever run (I don't think our feet even touched the ground). I ran around the corner house and hid behind a minivan parked in this driveway. I'm now half crying and half angry and my whole body is shaking. Then I look down and realize that I totally forgot that I had a thing of pepper spray hooked to my belt loop........it all happened so fast I didn't have time to think about it. Then the guy who's minivan I was hiding behind in his driveway, comes to me and tells me to stay there and he went out front to check to see if the dog was still lose. It was. His wife ran inside to call 911. Stupid useless 911. They tell his wife that this is not a 911 issue and she needs to call the police department.........so she does.......they tell her it's not their issue and she needs to call Animal Control.........so she does.........they're closed. Basically no one will come help. What has to happen........do I need to get mauled by this loose pitbull before the cops will come? I'm so angry and frustrated. Then the guy goes to check on the dog again and it's gone. He's assuming that the girl caught it and brought it back inside because she's not outside anymore either. I'm not taking the risk. As I was standing hiding behind his van, he tells me that this dog is loose all the time and that one time it chased a neighbor kid right into their home and they slammed the door right in the dog's face to make it not get in the house with the kid. I've seen it lose one other time also. So that makes AT LEAST three times that this dog has been loose and causing trouble. I got on my cell phone and called my BF and he came and picked me and Kaybie up and drove us home. I got the address of the dog's house and the address of the people that tried to help me and told me about how this dog is always loose and has chased kids. I am waiting for animal control to open right now and I'm going over there in person at lunch time to file a report. I'm so angry and frustrated. I can't even go for a walk now in my own neighborhood. I keep going over how bad this situation could have turned out. Kaybie could have been killed. I just laid with her and hugged her all night last night. I'm so thankful this dog didn't attack her. I'm so shook up.

Re: Kaybie's Life Flashed Before My Eyes (long)
I am so sorry to hear what happened. I can imagine how terrible and frightened you must have been for your life and Kaybie's. It makes me so angry at how ignorant and careless some people are. I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks back, but with a rottweiler. It ran out of the owners door while they were talking to the pizza guy and came charging right for Roscoe and I. The owner didnt even look twice and continued his converstation. It wasnt until I yelled across the street at him that he came and got his dog. Luckily, the dog was friendly, but how was I supposed to know it was, how was I supposed to know that this dog wasnt coming to eat Roscoe and I? And how did his owner know that Roscoe wasnt some terribly vicious dog? Anyway...I think you are doing the right thing by going to animal control to report these people. Hopefully they will do something other than just take the dog and euthanize it...make the owners pay (not litereally). I thought pitbulls were illegal in GR???? Maybe they were thinking about it or something, I dont remember...

OMG! What a frightful experience!
I am so glad you and Kaybie are ok and hopefully calmed down by now.
This dog must be reported if they are allowing it to run loose and chase/scare people like this.
I don't blame the dog btw, I blame the owners

I don't blame the dog either, but if it's terrorizing the neighborhood, it must be removed, one way or the other. I've never felt that scared and helpless and out of control before.

Pitbulls are not illegal in GR. There are no ordinances about them. But let me clarify, I have nothing against pitbulls. I just don't trust ones that I don't know personally. One of Kaybie's best friends is a pitbull and I have him at my house all the time. But when one comes charging at us with it's hackles up, sorry but I am going to be afraid.........very afraid.

Wow!! I am so glad to hear that you and your baby are alright. I was attacked by a german sheppard one time and it was terrible. I work for law enforcement and it is good that you are going to talk to animal control about this dog. One of these days someone might not be as lucky as you were and it could end up hurting or killing a child or dog....Give Kaybie a big hug for me....Linda

I agree with you completely. I remember seeing pictures of Kaybie and her friend the pitbull. I have nothing against them either, I am just unsure of ones I dont know also. I just thought I remembered something about them being banned in GR or something when I lived there...it was probably just a silly rumor

Re: Kaybie's Life Flashed Before My Eyes (long)
Glad to hear that you and Kaybie are ok. I know how scary that must have been.
When Wyatt was younger, I was walking him and pushing my son in the stroller. The neighbor's rotty got loose and came charging at Wyatt. Of course, Wyatt went into defensive mode. I don't know what I was thinking but I jumped in front of the stroller and picked poor Wyatt up by his collar, leaving him exposed to the Rotty. Luckily, the neighbor heard the commotion and came running and smacked his dog on the butt with a shovel and pulled him back before any damage was done. I called AC and they wouldn't do anything. A week later, the same dog attacked a Papillon as it was being walked by it's owner. AC gave the Rotty owner a warning. Apparently, they can't do anything til a human is attacked!

This is my fear, that nothing will be done. I'm hoping by giving them the address of the guy who said it chased a kid in their house will help them realize this is serious. We'll see. I'm going to Animal Control at lunch time.
