Keeping cool ideas

Roscoe is in his crate for a couple hours in the afternoon while dbf and I are both at work. It has been pretty hot here for the past few days and I am looking for some ideas to help keep Roscoe cool for the few hours he has to be in his crate. Right now I have a standing fan blowing on his crate and the ceiling fan on in the living room. I cant put wet/frozen towels in there because he will eat them, but I do give him an icecube as a treat when he goes in there. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can keep him cool in there until I can get my air conditioners put in?

Re: Keeping cool ideas

I take long pieces of rope, dunk them in water and freeze them.

I also bought a stash of ice-cube trays that I make tasty cubes with. I take a pile of soggy kibble and mash them into the trays with some other stuff to "spice it up"... usually some peanut butter or cheez wiz. He loves them even if they do smell up my freezer a little bit!

Last night it was so hot (my air conditioning isn't up and running yet either) that I acutally wiped my pup down with a wet cloth. He didn't enjoy it, but it stopped him from breathing rapidly in his sleep, which meant I could get some rest too!

I believe you can also get fans to attach to the crates. You might want to check with your local pet store or search online. When we were in Madrid, we got Allie a collar that she could wear to help keep her cool. I think it is made by Outward Hound, but I'm not sure. I know Drs. Foster and Smith sell a cooling pad. You could try that too.
I can only give him an ice cube as I leave or else I am sure there would be a mess when I got home with all the melted ice cubes and such. I do know that there is a cooling pad thing that you can buy and I have looked at it, but I dont remember how much it was. I'll have to look into that.

All great ideas for keeping your babies cool !

We don't have that problem very often here - I should start a new thread - "how to keep the house warm when your boxer hogs all the heat!"

I freeze a 20oz bottle (soda bottles) and let him have that. He's a chewer so after he gets the cap off he tongues the inside. My friends dog didn't chew it just coddled it and licked it a lot so If you have a chewer I wouldn't recommend leaving him alone with it -incase they try to swallow the cap- but Riley has fun with it.

yes, mine are chewers too, we've also tried the frozen bottle... within 30 seconds, axe has TWISTED the cap off-- not chewed flat, but actually twisted it off!!! crazy dog!!

we'll have to try the ice cube thing-- is it true that if they are REALLY hot, the ice is too cold and can stop their heart!! sounds bogus, but i didn't know...

Re: Keeping cool ideas

We bought Chief a Chilly Bone from PetSmart. It's a large bone that you freeze; and it keeps them cool as they chew!
