Face to face with Pepe La Pew (Long)
I'm sorry for length of this thread, but I have to set the stage before I get to main story. So please bear with me. For about the last week and a half, everytime that I have been out in my back yard, I have been able to smell the wonderful aroma of a skunk wafting through the air. It has been the most noticeable around the storage shed that I have. Although I haven't seen it lurking around, I know that one is close by. ABBY has also picked up on it's scent, because when I've let her out lately, the first she does is make a bee line out to shed. She normally will nose around the building, and if nothing peeks her interest, she'll go on about her business and be back inside the house within 5 to 10 minutes. All of that changed last night. I had let her go outside about 10:00 p.m., and I pushed the back door closed as she went out. I had just sat down to watch the news when all hell broke loose. I heard ABBY started barking and carrying on, and I could hear her growling, even though the door was shut. So I jumped up and ran to it, and about the same time as I flung it open, the smell hit me. It was so strong, that it almost knocked me down. All that I could see in the darkness was ABBY going around in cirlces and making noises like a she devil. Through a string of obscenities, I managed to slam the door closed and make it through the house to get my spotlight. On my way back, I briefly stopped at the medicine cabinet to grab some Vicks salve and smeared it under my nose, then prepared myself to wade out into the funk to rescue ABBY. I already had the spotlight on when I reopened the door, and when I shined the light at ABBY, it didn't take her a split second to forget about the skunk and make it inside the house. She was trembling with, I don't really know, I guess you could call it excitement. And then she started doing these wild ass burn outs though the entire house. By the time I got her calmed down, she had me and the whole place wreaking with the delightful odor of skunk. We didn't get out of bathtub until almost midnight, bathing her with dog shampoo and myself with soap and baking soda. And I've burnt up almost every scented candle that I have, trying to get the smell out of the house. Oh, what a night.

Oh my, sounds exciting. You might want to stock up on some tomatoe juice in case you get another visitor!

The absolute best way to get rid of skunk smell is to wash with hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a tsp of dishwashing soap. One of my dogs got spayed right in the face once. Tomato juice does nothing but cover the smell until they dry. But this combo works wonders! We now keep plenty on hand for the next time!!!

Actually disposable douches that you get in the drug store work the best they neutralize right away. Always rinse their eyes for 15 minutes with water when sprayed face to face Foreman is blind in one eye now from a skunk spray I didn't know that at the time I was more concerned about getting skunk spray all over the place.

Re: Face to face with Pepe La Pew (Long)
ahhh.... the memories! This happened to Sam two years ago! Funny thing came of it... he associated cats with skunks... and is now petrified! lol! The only cat he likes is Kitty because he's lived inside with us for his whole life. We did the tomato juice method... but it takes several baths of it to work. Maybe one of the other methods works better.
